Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who voices Conquest in Prime Video’s Invincible, admitted that the role was quite challenging. Morgan had previously worked with Steven Yeun, who voices Mark Grayson (aka Invincible), in The Walking Dead.

Interestingly, Morgan’s character, Negan, was the one who brutally killed Yeun’s character, Glenn, using a barbed-wire baseball bat.

Acknowledging the connection, Morgan joked about the casting choice, saying,

“I was just thrilled to get to be a part of it and give Steven his chance at redemption.”

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Conquest

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Morgan revealed that one of the reasons he took the role of Conquest was to give The Walking Dead fans some justice for Glenn.

However, Morgan was careful not to make Conquest feel like a copy of Negan. He focused on adjusting his voice to sound different from his famous Walking Dead character.

“I was trying to be aware of just voice inflection,”

he explained. He wanted to avoid falling back into Negan’s tone, adding,

“It’s so easy for me to get into Negan mode after this many years.”

Invincible creator Robert Kirkman had Morgan in mind for Conquest from the very beginning. He told Variety,

“I didn’t hesitate just because there is the meta of it all like, ‘Oh, it’s the rematch between Glenn and Negan, and now Glenn gets to win.’”

Kirkman also praised Morgan’s ability to bring depth to the villain.

“Conquest needs a lot of nuance. There's a tremendous amount of personality there, even though he is this giant, powerful brute that’s just wrecking things. And I knew Jeffrey could bring that... [It was] too great not to do.”

Steven Yeun also shared his thoughts on working with Morgan again:

“We certainly couldn’t ignore [The Walking Dead]... All I can say is that it is always a pleasure and honor to work with Jeffrey Dean Morgan. He is a great actor and human and also knows how to play a tremendous heel.”
