The upcoming TV reboot of Harry Potter already has every fan in their feels. The Wizarding World has been a part of our childhood for generations. This trend will probably pass on to the next generation, with the HBO reboot set for a 2027 premiere. 15 years after the final Harry Potter movie hit the theatres, the fan-favorite characters, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Draco, and the rest of Hogwarts Wizarding School, will be gracing our screens again.
Jason Issacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the original movies, talked about the experiences of his iconic role being recast. He has been identified as Draco Malfoy for decades, so it is a 'bittersweet' experience watching somebody else give life to his role. Here's what he said.
Jason Issacs on his role as Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter being recast

Jason Issacs is playing Timothy Ratliff in The White Lotus, Season 3. On the press run for his show, he often has to field questions about Harry Potter and the HBO reboot. In one such interview with Collider, Jason Isaacs spoke about what it was like knowing that his role would be recast and someone else would be filling his shoes. After accepting that a recasting of Lucius Malfoy would mean a new journey for him as well, he wistfully continues that even though this is a peculiar experience, this is not something in his control.
“It’s peculiar. Like you said, it's the first time it happened. I don't know what it's like. I'm relatively sanguine about things I have no choice over. No point resenting things that are happening, or regretting things. And so, it is what it is. It's going to be brilliant. I've been Lucius Malfoy for a long time. I guess I won't be Lucius Malfoy for the next generation. I could be upset about that if I chose to, but I'm trying to choose not to.”
He accepts that he has been Lucius Malfoy for a very long time, and that he won't be the same for the next generation, and that is a thing he has accepted. Isscas continues that even though he could choose to feel upset about this reality, he has a more pragmatic reaction, as there is no point in regretting things that are not in his control.
“The fact that there's another Harry Potter will supplant us, and we will — possibly — even be erased from history. It’s just what it is.”
He concedes that he's curious about the new look of Lucius Malfoy, as many of the factors that made Lucius Malfoy unique, from his capes to the long blond wig, were Issacs' version of the character.
"Since I came up with the whole look for him, which isn't in the book, I'm imagining they won't use any of the things like the long blond wig or the capes and the cane and all that stuff."
Jason Issacs also expresses that he has full faith in the HBO reboot of Harry Potter. He also reveals that one of the writers from the creative team is his goddaughter, Ripley Parker, an amazing writer in his opinion. He is sure that the creative team will do justice to the legacy of the Wizarding World as most have them have grown up with it and have carried it all their lives.
“One of the writers is my goddaughter Ripley Parker, who's a brilliant writer and has loved Harry Potter from the very first time she could touch the book. The fact that she's in the writers’ room makes me love it and wish it well.”
Issacs moves on to talk about other roles that he's played in his career, just as sanguinely as he's moved on from his iconic role in Harry Potter, but his absolute faith in the reboot is evident when he says that
"The series will be phenomenal because it's David Heyman, and it's Mark Mylod.”
