After a long wait, the Creature Commandos is finally here, and fans have already seen the first four episodes. Being a part of the revamped DC Universe, this animated series comes straight from James Gunn, focusing on a unique black ops team made up of classic monsters and supernatural beings from DC Comics.

Creatures Commandos debuted on Max in December 2024 and will conclude with its seventh episode in January 2025. Following the release of the fourth episode titled Chasing Squirrels, James Gunn talked about "the saddest thing" he has ever written.

Episode 4 dives into the tragic backstory of Weasel, a character introduced in The Suicide Squad. It explains how his unusual appearance and misunderstandings led to a chain of tragic events when the only thing Weasel wanted to do was help.

Per Variety, the director and Co-CEO of DC Studios said:

"I get really sad talking about it. remember finishing [writing] it. I was in Colorado with my wife, and I remember I said, ‘I think I just wrote the saddest thing that I’ve ever written in my entire life."

Throughout his career, Gunn has penned down several stories, but nothing seemed as tragic as Weasel's backstory. He was imprisoned in Belle Reve prison for a crime he never committed, which resulted in claims that he killed almost twenty-seven kids.

Since Creature Commandos is about the misfits, how can James Gunn not feature Weasel, a misunderstood character? The animated show highlighted his backstory through flashbacks in which we see him coming out of the woods behind an elementary school during Thanksgiving break.

While he didn't harm the children and wanted to get along with everyone, an old man misunderstood him as a threat and called the police. This marks the beginning of tragic events, in which Weasel had no involvement.

Later, the school caught fire and many children died, except for a girl whom Weasel was trying to save but got misunderstood again. As a result, he was labeled as the perpetrator of the accident and the one behind the deaths.

Creature Commandos episode 4 unveiled Weasel's lesser-known gentle nature, making the audience sympathize with him despite his odd, monstrous appearance. Additionally, Gunn is known for adding emotional depth to unlikely characters, and through Weasel's story in Creature Commandos he continues to explain how some creatures labeled as villains have complex, tragic stories.
