The upcoming Suits spin-off, Suits LA, has generated immense curiosity among the audience. However, fans of the legal drama remember how the show had already come up with another spin-off series around six years ago.
Pearson marked the first Suits spin-off in 2019. Starring Gina Torres in the lead, the show followed Jessica Pearson from the original show, who headed to Chicago and got involved in the city’s politics.
Despite the success of the original series, the spin-off failed to live up to the expectations and was canceled after only one season. Gina Torres has now opened up about the series, revealing how she helped in its development and wanted it to continue for more seasons.
Gina Torres talks about the canceled Suits spin-off series Pearson
Gina Torres recently had an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where she talked about how invested she was in Pearson. The actress, who served as an executive producer on the series, said:
“It is something I pitched; it is something I was heavily involved in creating. I’m very proud of it. I’m very proud of what we were able to do. I will say it is the show I wanted to make.”
After Jessica Pearson exited her law firm, Pearson continued her story by depicting her move to Chicago, where she started working for the mayor and got embroiled in the messy political world. The show premiered on the USA Network in July 2019 and aired 10 episodes. However, it was not renewed for another season.
Opening up about how the show deserved to continue, Torres said while the original series focussed only on the top management of legal firms, Pearson highlighted the everyday struggles of the employees. She said:
“I wish we had had more time. I wish we’d had more time to tell more stories, to dive a little bit deeper into that world, because I had often said that whereas Suits was about the top 5 percent, I wanted Pearson to be about everybody else. And I believe that we were able to accomplish that in a really special way.”
Created by Aaron Korsh and Daniel Arkin, the series also starred Bethany Joy Lenz as Keri Allen, Simon Kassianides as Nick D'Amato, Morgan Spector as Mayor Bobby Novak, Isabel Arraiza as Yoli Castillo, Chantel Riley as Angela Cook, and Eli Goree as Derrick Mayes.
Gabriel Macht and Rick Hoffman guest starred in the show and reprised their roles as Harvey Specter and Louis Litt, respectively, from the original show. Now, six years later, another Suits spin-off is ready to hit the screens.
Suits LA marks the third series in the franchise and revolves around Ted Black, an attorney who opens a law firm in Los Angeles, which goes through various ups and downs.
The new show stars Stephen Amell, along with Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott Davis, and Bryan Greenberg. At the same time, Macht will once again reprise his role as Harvey and return to the franchise in a recurring capacity. The show will premiere on NBC on February 23, 2025.
Pearson is available to stream on Peacock.
