With the popularity the American crime drama series, The Penguin, has gained since its release in September, fans have been interested in knowing if the series will be renewed for another season. This television miniseries, which was developed by American television writer Lauren LeFranc, is a spin-off of The Batman (2022).
The series is still running, with its finale episode set to air in November 2024, and all attention is now on whether we will have another season. The good news for fans is that recently, the show creator Matt Reeves released a statement sharing details about The Penguin Season 2.
What has Matt Reeves said about The Penguin Season 2?
In a recent interview with Esquire, Matt Reeves expressed his interest to "continue (The Penguin's) story." While he has not confirmed the second season, the American filmmaker acknowledged that the team is interested in exploring the narrative further. Speaking of The Penguin Season 2, Reeves said:
"I always said we’re going to continue [the Penguin’s] story. Initially, the idea was to continue it in the next film. And then when we were talking about doing shows, I was talking to [The Batman producer] Dylan Clark and [HBO heads] Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey.
"Casey said, ‘Look, I just want to say, I hope you’re not going to save the marquee characters for just the movies. This is HBO.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, let me tell you what this kind of Scarface-esque story is.’ It isn’t his origin story. It’s sort of like Batman’s story—the way that I did it—because there’d been so many origin tales. It’s the early days; it’s the origins of all of the rogues’-gallery characters," he added.
As fans await the eighth and final episode, there is hope that the show's success may lead to an official renewal announcement after that. With the season wrapping up in a week, viewers can anticipate further updates from the creators soon.
"I don’t know"- Colin Farrell on The Penguin Season 2
Although there’s no solid confirmation yet from Matt Reeves, lead actor Colin Farrell, who plays Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, opened up about the potential second season earlier this year. In a September 2024 interview with Total Film, Farrell was asked about season 2. He said:
"I don’t know, man. Don't get me wrong – I loved it – but it got in on me a little bit. By the end of it, I was bitching and moaning to anyone who would listen to me that I f-----g wanted it to be finished. I tried to remind them that I had 'grumpy gratitude.' I was still grateful, and still honored – I grew up watching Burgess Meredith [who played the role in the '60s TV series], and then Danny DeVito [in Tim Burton's 1992 film Batman Returns] was my Penguin – so being a part of the lineage of that storytelling, I really did feel privileged."
He continued,
"But by the end of it…It's not like I didn't know who I was and I was going out and burning cars and s--t, but… if you take what Matt Reeves created and then what Lauren [LeFranc, showrunner] did and what Mike [Marino, prosthetics and make-up designer] did and put them all together, it was a really powerful experience," he added.
If the creators decide to move forward with season 2, fans could expect to see Farrell return as the Penguin, along with other cast members from season 1. The first part cast includes Cristin Milioti as Sofia Gigante, Rhenzy Feliz as Victor "Vic" Aguilar, Deirdre O'Connell as Francis Cobb, Clancy Brown as Salvatore "Sal" Maroni, Carmen Ejogo as Eve Karlo and Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone.
Meanwhile, fans can tune in to HBO for the final episode of, Great or Little Thing. It will air on November 10, 2024.
