After much anticipation, Daredevil: Born Again landed on Disney+ on March 4, 2025. However, the show ended up breaking fans’ hearts in the premiere episode itself by killing off Foggy Nelson, Matt Murdock’s best friend who was a part of all three seasons of Netflix’s Daredevil.

Charlie Cox, who plays the lead role in the show, has opened up about the devastating death in an interview with Collider. The actor said he is just as sad as the audience with Foggy’s departure; however, it was something that was required for the narrative to move forward:

“I'm gutted, man. I'm gutted about it. Truly. What I will say is that we needed to do something big. We wanted to rock the boat a little bit and put the fans in a state of discomfort, and offer a catalyst for everything going forward.”

Foggy Nelson, played by Elden Henson, was Matt’s close friend and law firm partner in Daredevil: Born Again and its predecessor, Daredevil. In the pilot episode of the Disney+ series, Foggy is surprisingly shot and killed by Benjamin "Dex" Poindexter aka Bullseye.

The scene leaves the audience shocked and marks an end to the fan-favorite character. Talking about the whole scenario, Charlie Cox said even he has not come to terms with Foggy’s death:

“The tougher pill to swallow is what happens to my dear best friend, and I don't know that I'll ever quite come to terms with that—both Matt and Charlie. Foggy Nelson is one of the heartbeats of the MCU.”
“I don't know quite how you have a Matt Murdock or a Daredevil without him. Elden’s done such a beautiful job with that character over the years.”

Cox added that both his character and the overall show are going to be impacted by Foggy’s absence:

“Matt Murdock will never be the same again. The show will never be the same again, and it's a big choice. There are some good things about it, and there's a lot we've lost.”

In Daredevil: Born Again episode 1, Foggy’s murder deeply affects Matt as he hangs up his boots as a superhero vigilante and starts working as a full-time lawyer. The incident also pulls him apart from Karen, who decides to move to the other side of the country.

Foggy was one of the characters from the Netflix series, whose return to the revival had fans excited. Other actors and characters who are returning in Daredevil: Born Again include Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, Wilson Bethel as Bullseye, and Ayelet Zurer as Vanessa Marianna-Fisk.

Daredevil: Born Again premiered on March 4, 2025, and airs new episodes weekly.
