"Pedro Pascal’s Joel Miller met a tragic fate in The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 2, as he was killed by Abby in an act of vengeance. Since the show is based on the eponymous video games, fans already knew his future, but nobody expected Pascal to be written off the show so soon.
However, this is not the first time that the actor’s brutal on-screen death has become the talk of the town. A similar incident happened with his Game of Thrones character, Oberyn Martell, who died a horrific death during a trial by combat against The Mountain.
Pascal has now compared his The Last of Us and Game of Thrones deaths in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, jokingly stating how he gets killed in almost every other project he stars in:
“I get killed a lot. I like to die. I think this [The Last of Us death] is the best one. No, it's in competition, I think, with Game of Thrones. It has to be. I love the golf club. I'm going to start golf.”
Pedro Pascal talks about his characters’ deaths in The Last of Us and Game of Thrones
In The Last of Us Season 2, Abby smashes Joel’s head with a golf club, killing him in front of Ellie. The scene leaves fans heartbroken and reminds them of Oberyn Martell’s death in Game of Thrones.
In the fantasy drama, Oberyn represented Tyrion Lannister in a trial by combat against Gregor Clegane, aka The Mountain, during which the latter brutally crushed his face. Interestingly, Pedro Pascal’s characters have died in a few other shows and films, including Kingsman: The Golden Circle, The Equalizer 2, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
During the interview, Pascal revealed he was made aware of Joel’s death even before signing on The Last of Us, and hence, he knew how much time he had on the show:
“It was part of the deal. They're like, ‘Don't worry, you're going to die.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, I'll take it!’ I just think that the series is based on very specific source material, and so that was always a part of the presentation of the idea that we would go all in on season 1, shoot for 11-12 months in Alberta, and then it would take a totally different shape the second season. And this is why it was like that.”
While Joel has died in the storyline, Pascal is still expected to appear in the show in flashback sequences. The series also stars Bella Ramsey, Kaitlyn Dever, Gabriel Luna, Young Mazino, and Isabela Merced in pivotal roles.
The second season of the post-apocalyptic drama drops new episodes on HBO and Max on Sundays.
