Noah Wyle is earning praise for his nuanced performance as Dr. Robby in Max’s The Pitt. The actor had already become a household name in the 1990s with another medical drama, ER, where he starred as the lead.

However, not many fans remember that during his ER days, Noah Wyle made a cameo appearance in the cult classic sitcom Friends, along with his co-star George Clooney. The two appeared in Friends Season 1 Episode 17, The One with Two Parts: Part 2.

Wyle has now reflected on his experience of working in the sitcom. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor said he was quite naive at the time and did not feel any pressure.

“I didn't think it had any pressure or attendant pageantry. That's how naive I was. I’m sure at all the levels above us, they were just thrilled at this like, ‘We're taking the guys from the ER! We're putting them on Friends!’”

In the episode, Noah Wyle and George Clooney played doctors, similar to their roles in ER. They came across Monica and Rachel as the latter needed treatment for her sprained ankle. During the interview, Wyle revealed that since both Friends and ER were NBC shows, it was natural for them to cross over.

“It was all very social and collegiate. We all auditioned for the same stuff. And then we got on these shows that were on the same network, same night, same studio, same lot.”
“And we sold them together, and then we would go over and watch them tape, and then it just seemed like the lowest hanging fruit to cross-pollinate for the network to have us be on their show. But it seemed totally natural because we were all hanging out anyway.”

The Pitt actor added that now that he revisits his Friends’ scenes, he is surprised to see how he looked like a baby at that time:

“I go back and I've seen those clips now and I just can't believe what a baby face I have – I look more like my 19-year-old daughter than I do now. It's crazy. I remember thinking it was almost like a gas that we were doing it. It was just doing a walk-on.”

Following the conclusion of ER, Wyle appeared in shows like Falling Skies, The Red Line, and Leverage: Redemption. Since the beginning of the year, he has been receiving critical acclaim and the audience’s love for his portrayal of Dr. Robby in The Pitt. The show follows a 15-hour-long emergency room shift and authentically depicts the trials and tribulations faced by doctors daily.

Both The Pitt and Friends are available to stream on Max.
