As the AGT 2024 final results are approaching, fans are eagerly waiting to know the winner. During the AGT finale performance night, which aired on September 17, 2024, a prank was played on all the judges. Judge Howie Mandel and his friend, actor David Alan Grier, were behind the prank.
Howie was in a fun mood, so he got his friend's help and decided to play pranks on the AGT 2024 judges. The prank was that David would direct some of the promos, which he referred to as "prank promos," and annoy the judges.
"I'm here to play a prank on the Judges. I'm going to direct some promos but mostly annoy the heck out of these Judges. Howie called me up and planned this whole thing. So he's the one to blame, OK?" confessed David Alan Grier.
David Alan Grier on AGT 2024: "Prank promos" explored
During filming the America's Got Talent Season 19 finale performance episode, show host Terry Crews told the judges about some "promotions." All the judges will be filming the promos. He also shared that David Alan Grier would be directing the videos.
However, in a solo confessional, David told the cameras he was there after his plan with Howie Mandel. They both planned to annoy the judges, and that's how they would play the prank. He also shared that,
"I pity the other Judges."
The prank, which no other judges except Howie knew, started with their first promo. There was a giant blue screen behind them. After setting the production items, Simon, Sofia, and Heidi began to read their lines, unaware that it was a prank.
To annoy the judges while they spoke, there were some loud noises (on purpose) behind the stage. While the judges tried to read from the teleprompter, the audio was not audible. Simon also asked if the promo would pick up "all the stuff behind" them. Allan said,
"Absolutely."
Then, the AGT 2024 judges were given "funny sunglasses," which they were supposed to wear. Then came the "cowboy hats" for the "alleged" promo for the San Antonio, Texas region.
Annoyed, Simon said,
"No, I'm not wearing any of this."
Next was a prompt for New York, for which Heidi was given the lines,
"Eyy, bata bing! Ey yo! How you doin' New York? Fuhgettaboutit. Turn on NBC 4 New York this Tuesday!"
Seeing such promos and requirements for particular "accents" and "props," Simon did not seem fine. He then refused to use any more props. While the other AGT 2024 judges were still filming the "Chicago" promo, Simon went to David.
He then asked who was in the "promo department" and "who wrote these" awful lines.
Later, while all the judges were ready for the episode's filming, host Terry Crews revealed that all those "promos" were the pranks played by Howie and his friend David.
"Simon, you did not look like you were having fun. A big thanks to David Alan Grier," said Terry crews.
