“He’s very damaged”: Anthony Michael Hall talks about Zachary Beck’s ‘dark side’ in Reacher Season 3

Anthony Michael Hall plays Zachary Beck, one of the many villains in Reacher season 3. The Prime Video action crime drama revolves around Jack Reacher, a former army man and hobo who fights against dangerous criminals.

In the new season, Jack comes across Zachary Beck, a seemingly ordinary businessman dealing with rugs, who is actually operating a criminal enterprise. In an interview with Variety, Anthony Michael Hall explained how Zachary is a damaged character whose troubled relationship with his son Richard could give him a chance at redemption:

“When you’re playing a dark character, you want to find some light in him. I think the light in him is his relationship with Richard. He’s very damaged, and it’s a damaged relationship. He’s looking to redeem himself to his son, so there’s that sense of self-forgiveness and redemption.”

Anthony Michael Hall opens up about Zachary Beck’s dark side in Reacher Season 3

In the same interview, Anthony Michael Hall highlighted how Zachary is stuck in the criminal world and is only using his dark side to stay alive amid the power struggle in a dangerous scenario:

“It’s a very rich character. He has a cover for his life and is operating within this framework of a criminal network. But there’s a power struggle, and he’s trying to stay alive as a criminal with this very dark side.”

Hall also discussed how his relationship with his real-life son, who was born in 2023, helped him prepare for his character and his on-screen relationship with Richard Beck:

“I had a wealth of things to draw on. That allowed me to really connect with the whole nature of the Richard and Zach relationship.”

In Reacher Season 3, Jack Reacher is on a mission to hunt down Francis Xavier Quinn, a corrupt former lieutenant colonel. When he gets to know that Quinn is connected to Zachary Beck, he pretends to save Richard from kidnapping to win his father’s trust.

Meanwhile, he has collaborated with the DEA to save an agent whose disappearance is linked with Zachary’s crimes. Apart from Zachary and Quinn, Jack also has to face off against a gigantic bodyguard named Paulie in the new season.

Along with Hall, Reacher season 3 stars Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher, Maria Sten as Frances Neagley, Sonya Cassidy as Susan Duffy, Johnny Berchtold as Richard, Olivier Richters as Paulie, and Brian Tee as Francis Xavier Quinn.

The series has been developed by Nick Santora and is based on Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novel series. The third season premiered on Prime Video on February 20, 2025, and has so far been received well by the audience.

New episodes of Reacher season 3 are dropped on Prime Video on Thursdays.
