Concerning Pompeo's presence, People confirmed that she's going to be appearing in 7 episodes in the upcoming season 21. In Variety's Actors on Actors segment in 2023, Pompeo teases Meredith Grey's future, saying,
"It's not a complete goodbye. And I think we've got an interesting story to tell."
Likewise, speaking to Deadline earlier this month, Speedman mentions the possibility of appearing in more than the confirmed 5 episodes, saying,
"Maybe, yeah, we'll see. I never know what's going on over there. But, I hope so, it's a fun show."

When did we last see Meredith and Nick in Grey's Anatomy?
The on-screen couple made their last appearance in episode 5 of season 20, titled "Never Felt So Alone." The episode saw the duo navigate their lives in Boston with her children.
Meredith has had her fair share of medical scares when it comes to her kids. This was another one; after noticing an abnormality in her son Bailey's health, Nick decided to rush him to a hospital. The only problem was that he didn't keep Meredith in the loop.
Naturally, as a mom, not only did she completely freak out but was furious at her lover for not consulting with her before rushing him to the hospital. They got into a heated argument about how she isn't alone anymore, especially when it comes to parenting her kids.
After having some time to cool off, they finally talk things through and re-affirm their feelings for each other, sharing a heartwarming kiss.
