Oyelowo opens up on his upcoming series Government Cheese

Government Cheese is produced by Yoruba Saxon, the company Oyelowo founded with his wife, Jessica, in 2014. In an interview with Deadline, Oyelowo shared how working on Silo left him impressed with Apple TV+'s approach. He appreciated the creative autonomy they offer and wanted the same for his production company.

“The amazing thing about Apple is that they know what they know and they know what they don’t. They know what good business looks like, but they’re still young when it comes to being creators of content, and that means that their partnerships with creatives are true.”

His first-look deal with Apple TV has now come to fruition with their debut collaboration, Government Cheese. Talking about this deal, he noted:

“The great thing about Apple is that an Apple original is actually a very real thing. A lot of the time it’s an original idea because they don’t have a library to rely on. They don’t have all this IP to continue to mine, and that’s incredibly exciting for a creative person who likes to color outside the lines of what we’ve already done or already seen.”

Oyelowo explains that the show's unusual title references government-subsidized cheese, a staple for welfare recipients in the mid-20th century. This processed cheese was used during WW2 and has been used in schools since the 1950s. In an interview with Variety, co-creator Aeysha Carr talks about the titular term:

''We like the vagueness of the title; we are not talking about this block of cheese or government assistance; we’re talking about taking something small and making it big.”
