Harry Potter is set to return to the small screens, as HBO has confirmed that they are turning the J.K. Rowling magnum opus into a TV series, with a completely new cast.
But who are they going to be?
As per the showrunners, Albus Dumbledore will officially be portrayed by John Lithgow, and an open casting call has been issued for the roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and their ginger friend Ron Weasley.
And now, according to a post on Screen Time's official X account, Janet McTeer will reportedly play Professor Minerva McGonagall and become one of the most beloved, although a little strict Professor of the Wizarding World.
What Do We Know So Far About The Harry Potter TV Series By HBO
Initially slated for a late 2026 or early 2027 release, the all new Harry Potter television series is aiming for a faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling's seven-book series, as stated by the Chairman and CEO of HBO, Casey Bloy.
Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on "Succession," is attached as the writer and showrunner, while Mark Mylod, also known for his work on "Succession," is set to direct multiple episodes of the upcoming series. J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, is going to be actively involved as an executive producer, to ensure the series remains true to its original narrative.

At a Max Showcase held in London on December 4, Gardiner, Mylod, and Casey Bloys provided the first update on the series. They disclosed that 32,000 individuals auditioned for the key roles of Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley, and Hermione Granger. The casting team is currently evaluating audition recordings at a pace of 500 to 1,000 per day, aiming to review all submissions.
The subsequent stage involves creating a shortlist, with a planned "workshop" to take place in January 2025. Gardiner expressed her enthusiasm for delving into "the character arcs" and further exploring Hogwarts, including the lives of its diverse staff, both beloved and feared. Mylod concurred that their goal is not to "undo what was done so brilliantly" in the films, but rather to enhance it.
