Reese Witherspoon treated her fans to an exciting update about Elle, the much-anticipated Legally Blonde prequel series heading to Prime Video. This upcoming show will take us back in time to see what Elle Woods was like in high school, way before she started ruling Harvard Law School.
While chatting on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Reese revealed that they're in the middle of finding the perfect young actress to play the role of Elle by going through a bunch of audition tapes.
She's enjoying the process, saying:
"I just love them all so much, and they’re doing such a good job."
The idea for the prequel came to Reese after seeing how well Wednesday did on Netflix. She thought it would be fun to explore what the character was like as a teen:
"I wanted to see who she was before college, before law school," she told The Hollywood Reporter.
The show is being put together by Laura Kittrell, who's known for her work on Insecure, and it's set in the 1990s. It'll tell the story of Elle's life leading up to the point where she becomes the iconic blonde we've all come to adore.
So, get ready to go back in time and see how Elle's journey began before she became the brilliant, pink-loving lawyer we know!
Elle Woods goes to high school in the Legally Blonde prequel
Unlike the college-bound character in the original Legally Blonde, this new series will give us a younger version of this Harvard student.
They're working hard to make sure it feels like a throwback to that time but still appeals to people who've been fans for a while and those who are just discovering the story now. This show will be a delightful walk down memory lane with all the fashion and cultural bits from the '90s that we love.
It'll also show how she began developing her unmistakable self-assurance, charming ways, and dreams of being a lawyer. We'll see her tackle the typical high school dramas, like dealing with rivalries, making friends, and getting a taste of the legal world she'd later conquer. Her positive outlook and unshakeable spirit will be central to the story, making sure it's nostalgic yet relatable.
Casting challenges to find the perfect young Elle
Witherspoon has openly acknowledged that finding the perfect actress to embody the role of young Elle Woods is quite a challenge.
She shared with The Hollywood Reporter:
"Now they have to shoot, produce, do all the costumes [for auditions], they have to put together videos that are basically like a mini movie. It’s crazy!"
The challenge is to discover someone who can truly represent her lovable personality, clever humor, and the famous "bend and snap" move, all while adding a modern twist to the character's teenage. Reese Witherspoon, who's also helping to produce the show with Lauren Neustadter, Lauren Kisilevsky, and Marc Platt, cares about finding the perfect person to play the part.
You'll be able to watch this new version of Elle on Prime Video. Although we don't have an exact date for when it'll come out, filming is slated to begin soon.
