Fans are buzzing about what’s next for the Doctor Who franchise, especially with season 3 on the horizon. After two successful seasons on Disney+, including the Christmas special Joy to the World featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, the Whovian community is filled with speculation and eager to see what happens next.

In an interview with SFX magazine, showrunner Russell T. Davies shared some information about a potential season 3. He mentioned that we can expect news about it after season 2 wraps up.

"It’s an industry decision, it's like any business – these things take time," Davies explained.

It makes sense because Disney originally wanted to order two seasons from the get-go. The success of the first and second seasons will probably decide what happens with the show.

'Joy to the World,' the Christmas special, is probably one of the most highly anticipated events on the Doctor Who calendar. It's written by former showrunner Steven Moffat, who returned for this festive special. If his past episodes are anything to go by, this promises to be one of the most memorable Doctor Who specials ever.

Moffat, known for his twisted yet emotional storytelling, has hinted that this special dives into what the Doctor is like when he’s on his own. It’s something fans have been curious about since the character first showed up. Nicola Coughlan, best known for Bridgerton, will be in this episode with Ncuti Gatwa. She'll be playing Joy.

Moffat called Coughlan's performance "wonderful" and promised she would "break your heart." The episode is expected to take the Doctor to all sorts of unpredictable locations and, as Moffat said in a behind-the-scenes YouTube video, it will be "one of the maddest Christmas specials you'll ever see."

While fans digest news about the Christmas special, excitement is building for season 2 of Doctor Who. The new season is due in the middle of next year. Season 2 will see new characters introduced, along with some of our old favorites.

Another addition is Varada Sethu, who’s coming on board as Belinda Chandra. This was announced at San Diego Comic-Con. Since Sethu was in season 1 as Mundy Flynn, people are talking about how the two roles might be linked, but we don’t have any confirmation on that yet.

Millie Gibson returns as Ruby Sunday, and her storyline picks up where it left off in season 1. Despite rumors that she'd left the series, showrunner Russell T. Davies said there was still more for Gibson to do with the character.

Davies mentioned that there are still plenty of questions about Ruby's background, especially with the mixed feelings people have about her family situation. He said:

"Her story arc continues into the next season."

Also, Anita Dobson's mysterious Mrs. Flood, whose moments breaking the fourth wall have left audiences scratching their heads, will have her storyline fleshed out in the upcoming season.

To catch up with the adventures of the Fifteenth Doctor, season 1 is on Disney+.
