Following the success of the 2009 film, The Princess and the Frog, Disney planned a whole new Tiana animated series, focusing on the lead character Tiana, a hardworking young woman with a dream of opening her own restaurant, a dream she shared with her late father.
However, the animated series, supposed to be a long-form musical for Disney+ has been canceled. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed the news, and the outlet has also mentioned that it is Walt Disney Animation Studios's decision.
Why? Turns out the studio is no longer interested in crafting "original long-form content for streaming". As for the cast, actress, Anika Noni Rose, gained immense commendation for voicing Tiana in the 2009 film and was also planning to reprise her role.
However, Disney isn't completely moving away from the Princess and the Frog franchise, as they plan to make new projects focusing on the black princess. This way, the cancellation doesn't feel too disappointing, as fans will again dive into the adventures of the beloved frog princess.

The Tiana animated series canceled at Disney

After almost five years of announcing a spin-off featuring the Princess and the Frog character Tiana, Disney has decided to abandon the project. The 2009 film introduced fantasy and adventure enthusiasts to a strong, independent heroine who wanted nothing but a restraint of her own.
Unlike typical animated films, Tiana believes in hard work over magic. She resides in New Orleans where she crosses paths with Prince Naveen of Maldonia. In a tragic turn of events, Naveen falls into the trap of a sinister doctor which results in him and Tiana becoming frogs.
Now both stuck as frogs, the duo faces several challenges during their theory quest through the Louisiana Bayou. In a dramatic final confrontation, Tiana outsmarts Dr. Facilier and breaks his spell. In the end, she and the Prince are restored to their human forms.
As for Tiana, she becomes a real princess and even opens her long-awaited restaurant. The canceled spin-off was supposed to follow these events where the Frog Princess would face new challenges as a royalty.
However, the outlet has also revealed a new short-form special based on The Princess and the Frog to continue the story of the princess. Since the project is mentioned to be in the early stages, Disney has shared full details of the project.
Till then, you can re-watch The Princess and the Frog on Disney+
