As Severance edges closer to its Season 2 finale, fans of the Apple TV+ show are eagerly waiting for a confirmation about the third season. As of now, Apple TV+ is yet to confirm whether Severance will be renewed for a third season or not.
The first and the second season of Severance were separated by a long three years owing as much to the Hollywood strikes as to the sense of creative perfectionism preferred by creators, Dan Erickson and Ben Stiller.
Despite there being no official confirmation, Ben Stiller had earlier hinted that the third season of Severance might soon be in the pipeline and that work was already underway.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter in February this year, Ben Stiller made a positive comment on the third season of the popular show:
"Everything changed a lot after the strike, for everyone, in terms of the way people are looking at budgets and spending. To Apple’s credit, they stayed on track with what the show was, and they’ve supported it," he said.
Severance surpassed all other Apple TV+ shows in terms of its popularity
The Apple TV+ show has been steadily building a wide audience since its debut season premiered in 2022. With the release of its hugely anticipated second season, Severance peaked in popularity, leaving behind even the wildly popular show, Ted Lasso. According to a report by Deadline, the show was at the fourth spot on Nielson's Top 10 during the week of its premiere in January this year.
Severance also raked in a massive 589 million minutes of viewership in the United States, boosted Apple TV+ subscriptions by +126% in competitive analysis between January 2025 and December 2024, and even became the #1 most-watched show on the streaming platform across the international market.
Despite being such a huge success, the third season's fate remains unclear. The second season was confirmed just days before the Season 1 finale. The Apple TV+ Head of Programming, Matt Cherniss, told Deadline:
"We have long admired Ben’s extraordinary gift for original and immersive storytelling, and with he and Dan at the helm, Severance has proven to be an extraordinary success and a cultural phenomenon. The series has become an obsession for audiences all over the world and we can’t wait for people to continue to experience all the masterful twists and turns as the rest of the season unfolds."
Severance Season 1 and 2 are exclusively available on Apple TV+.
