Dark Winds Season 3 is finally out and brings back the gripping psychological thriller set in the 1970s Navajo Nation. While the new season features a new mystery, Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee remain the focus of the acclaimed TV series.
Dark Winds Season 3 kicked off six months after the events of the previous season, and Leaphorn and Chee are drawn into a new investigation—the disappearance of two young boys. Their quest isn't as easy as it might look, as the duo finds themselves encountering a group of people who might be hiding crucial information.
However, Leaphorn and Chee's new mission isn't the only reason why they cannot stop praising the AMC TV series. The two surprise appearances of George R.R. Martin, the mastermind behind Game of Thrones, and legendary actor Robert Redford thrilled fans as they watched the premiere.
In the cameo, Martin and Redford appear as two prisoners locked up inside a jail and playing chess. Since Martin takes his time to decide his next move in the game, another prisoner (Redford) teases him, saying:
"George, the whole world's waiting."
Yes. You read it right. Game of Thrones fans would immediately recognize this as a direct, playful jab at Martin's infamous delay in finishing The Winds of Winter. It has been over a decade since fans have been waiting for the upcoming book in the A Song of Ice and Fire book series.

Dark Winds Season 3 features George R.R. Martin in a cameo
Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee are back in Dark Winds Season 3, and while the two are concerned about the two missing boys, we also see fan-adored author George R.R. Martin making a cameo, along with Robert Redford in the first episode.
As mentioned earlier, the two are seen as prisoners, passing time by playing chess inside the jail. When Redford mentions Martin's delay during the game, he says "checkmate," subtly acknowledges the waiting game, and reminds everyone that he’s still in charge of his storytelling pace.
This way, the Dark Winds Season 3 premiere becomes even more engaging and fun. It wasn't just a treat for fans but also a great moment for Zahn McClarnon (Joe Leaphorn), who shared his thoughts on working with two legends. The actor said:
"[It was a] very exciting day for me. A dream come true. Working with two legends. I grew up with Robert Redford and his films. He was one of my idols growing up in the ’70s, there was a movie, Little Fauss and Big Halsey that was a big inspiration to me at six years old."
McClarnon lauded George R.R. Martin for crafting some of the best fantasy books of this generation. Both Martin and Redford are described as warm and welcoming, making the experience even more special.
