Dark Winds Season 3 Episode 4: Halsey's murder
It was revealed in the third episode of Dark Winds Season 3 that Halsey was the one who was linked to Ernesto Cata's death and did not have an alibi for the night on which Cata died. Leaphorn eventually learned from Suzanne about Halsey controlling the chili farm, and this led him to eventually raid the farm.
On the other hand, Halsey reported to AGS industries about the police raid and thus it was confirmed that Tom Spenser has a connection to the farm himself. After realizing that he has been strung out to dry by the higher ups, Halsey burns his red pickup truck and absconds. However, Leaphorn soon descends upon him at the reservation.
Leaphorn successfully turns Halsey to testify against Spencer's whole operation, which is said to be that of manufacturing drugs with the chili farm serving as a front. Halsey testifies on condition of being immune to the drug and murder charges. Nevertheless, in an unexpected twist, Halsey is killed after someone slits his throat right inside the police station when the station lights go out briefly.
Agent Washington suspects Leaphorn of BJ Vines' murder
An elderly witness approached FBI Agent Washington to aid in her investigation of the murder of BJ Vines. The witness didn't speak English, and therefore, Washington asked Leaphorn to help her and translate. Although the witness didn't catch Leaphorn's face, he did describe the car he was in. Washington then looks up the vehicle only to find that there are at least a thousand matches in the county.
However, after narrowing down her range and following her instincts, her suspicion falls on Leaphorn, as he has the same car and a motive to kill Vines. When Washington asks Leaphorn about his whereabouts on the night of the murder, Leaphorn cites Emma as his alibi. Washington, however, isn't exactly convinced.
