Charlie Cox and Wilson Bethel appeared at FAN EXPO San Francisco 2024 to promote Daredevil: Born Again, the continuation of the Netflix Daredevil series. At the panel, the British actor also expressed a desire to join Peter Safran and James Gunn's DCU for one particular role. He expressed an interest in playing the Joker, the Clown Prince of Crime, who is diametrically opposed to his current character.

Cox has had a storied TV career, but his breakout role was in the 2007 movie Stardust, which also starred Claire Danes and Henry Cavill. Charlie Cox has appeared in numerous movies over the years, but he is known for his TV appearances. So, the role of Joker may finally cement him as a star on the silver screen.

A fan at the Daredevil: Born Again FAN EXPO San Francisco 2024 panel asked both Wilson Bethel and Charlie Cox about their dream DCU role. Cox replied with The Joker. He answered like this:

"I wouldn't want to take it on based on the actors you have in the past because they're so brilliant, but I was thinking like, the Joker would be a lot of fun. If you could find a way to do something. You know, I mean, Heath Ledger, for me, nailed that part, obviously. If you could find a new take on it in some way that would be cool."

Bethel conversely answered the fan with his hope for playing one of the Ninja Turtles, Michelangelo.

While it is unlikely that Cox can play the Joker, it doesn't mean that the actor cannot join the DCU. In fact, Charlie Cox can play a similar character, the Dark Knight, who shares many similarities with The Man Without Fear. But it remains to be seen if anything is official.

Why Charlie Cox as Batman could work

With his decade-long run as Daredevil, Charlie Cox has proved that he can play the role of a dark and brooding vigilante with a strict no-killing rule. So, the MCU to DCU should not be that hard for Cox. Also, both Batman and Daredevil have no special powers that help them fight crime. In the case of Daredevil, even if he has heightened senses, they don't help him throw a punch. This makes him similar to Batman.

Every night, both these characters fight real-world crimes and the mob. Apart from that, both Batman and Daredevil have had seminal comic-book runs written by the celebrated writer Frank Miller. These similarities also resulted in a crossover.

Batman/Daredevil: King of New York (2000) brings these two dark vigilantes together. In the comic, Catwoman steals something from Kingpin and runs to Gotham. Daredevil follows her, and that's when he comes to blows with none other than The Dark Knight. However, soon, they both discover a sinister plot involving Scarecrow that brings the two feuding heroes together to deliver justice.

Charlie Cox could potentially play a role in the DC Extended Universe, given his success as Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It would be interesting to see him take on a new iconic character, whether it be as a villain like the Joker or as a hero like Batman.
