Shōgun season 2 is the highly-awaited next installment of the FX historical drama. The show has seen phenomenal success and has swept trophies at all the major award ceremonies this year.
Based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, the drama was intended to be a limited series, but the network decided to continue it for two more seasons, considering the unprecedented response.
While the main characters are returning in the second season, the creators have not revealed if Moeka Hoshi, who plays Usami Fuji, will reprise her role. The actress has now talked about her potential appearance in Shōgun season 2. While Hoshi did not confirm her return, she did say that she is in talks with the series creator.
Moeka Hoshi talks about her potential return as Usami Fuji in Shōgun Season 2
In a recent interview with Collider, Moeka Hoshi was asked if she would be coming back as Usami Fuji in Shōgun season 2. The Japanese actress said she has to keep it a secret but is having discussions with series co-creator Justin Marks:
“It’s a secret, but I am kind of talking to Justin Marks a little bit.”
Usami’s return is still not confirmed, as the character’s main arc was completed by the end of the first installment. Usami is the granddaughter of Toranaga's general and friend, Toda Hiromatsu. Her life falls apart when her husband and their baby are killed by the Council of Regents as a punishment.
She is then sent to Ajiro to serve Lord Toranaga. There, she becomes John Blackthorne’s consort and later renounces her family life to become a nun. In the season 1 finale, she says goodbye to John and releases her husband and child’s ashes into the water.
Since James Clavell’s novel was entirely adapted into the first season, the creators have to come up with an original storyline for Usami if they want to include her character in Shōgun season 2.
Meanwhile, Moeka Hoshi has shot to global stardom with the series and has won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her stellar performance. Before starring in Shōgun, the actress had mostly appeared in Japanese projects.
Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, Shōgun tells the story of Yoshii Toranaga, the lord of Kantō, whose life is threatened by the council of five Regents. Meanwhile, an English sailor accidentally reaches the country, which changes the course of Toranaga’s life.
Along with Moeka Hoshi, the first season stars Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, Cosmo Jarvis as Pilot Major John Blackthorne, Tadanobu Asano as Kashigi Yabushige, Tommy Bastow as Father Martin Alvito, Takehiro Hira as Ishido Kazunari, and Anna Sawai as Toda Mariko.
All episodes of Shōgun season 1 are streaming on Hulu.
