Charlie Cox hadn't heard about Marvel's Daredevil character despite starring in it
During the Daredevil: Born Again panel discussion at FAN EXPO San Francisco 2024, Charlie Cox was asked if he was interested in the character before being cast for the same. His reply was surprising as he had "never heard of the character" ever.
"I didn't even know about him. I'd never heard of him. I genuinely, like, when you said 'Daredevil' I thought you were talking about a noun. Like a mountaineer or a rock climber or like someone who jumps through fire hoops on a motorcycle. You know, that's who I thought Daredevil was." he said.
However, once cast, he fully immerses himself in the Marvel lore, bracing himself with every detail about the character. The character made some cameos in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk.
Cox is also part of the talented cast list of Echo. In an interview with Cinema Blend, Sydney Freeland, the director of Disney + Echo, described Cox saying,
"I would say that Charlie and Vincent, I think there's a reason they got along so well in the Netflix series. They're both extremely thoughtful actors who cared deeply about their roles. Like, if Daredevil is blind and Maya's deaf, how are they gonna communicate?’ And, we were all just sort of dumbfounded at that moment, cause that wasn't something we, and mind you we're already months in the prep on this thing, and it had never occurred to any of us. "
She further revealed that Charlie's quest for the character initiated various questions that the makers as able-bodied people never thought of.
Similarly, the producer Richie Palmer called Cox an "expert" with his character according to a report by Cinema Blend.
Why did Charlie Cox agree to the role, despite not having heard of the character before?
According to some reports, Charlie revealed that "he was all in for the role". This is because of how beautiful the script was.
He said, "I was blown away by how good they were. I was a fan of the Marvel movies, but I hadn't read anything they had done that was this dark and geared to a much more mature audience."
Cox was fascinated with the duality of the character as a blind lawyer and a vigilante. The character struggled with morality, trauma, and resilience which resonated with Cox. He talks about the corridor fight scene in the second episode of season 1, saying,
"That particular scene required immense amounts of moving parts and detail and we had to get it right because it was all one take. It was very tiring, very physically challenging. Of course I have a stunt double, but I do a lot of the work as well and I really enjoy that aspect of it."
This shows Charlie Cox's sincerity towards the role and the character. So what if he had not heard about it before he was cast for the role? He managed to give justice to the character keeping it as authentic as he could.
