CBS has big plans for the Blue Bloods franchise, as it will launch its spin-off show called Boston Blue in the 2025-26. Donnie Wahlberg is back as Danny Reagan, but this time, he's switching from the NYPD to the Boston Police Department. This marks a new phase in Danny's law enforcement career.
This news comes only two months after the original Blue Bloods finished its successful 14-season run. The show will keep the crime drama feel that fans love but with some twists. The fresh faces leading Boston Blue include showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, known for their work on The Blacklist and Alert: Missing Persons Unit. Donnie Wahlberg will also be an executive producer alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Kristie Anne Reed.
In Boston Blue, Danny will team up with Detective Lena Peters, who is part of a well-known law enforcement family in Boston. The show will bring a new vibe while staying true to the original's style.
Boston Blue: Plot, characters, and setting
Danny Reagan's journey from New York to Boston is the main focus of Boston Blue. This show brings new challenges and dynamics as he starts life in a different city. His new partner, Detective Lena Peters, has a family background in the police force, which makes their work relationship complex. The series will show Boston's unique law enforcement culture, a change from the New York-centered storytelling of Blue Bloods.
CBS Studios President David Stapf talked about creating the spin-off in July 2024. He said it's important to be:
"Getting it right."
Experienced crime drama producers are working on the show, which means it will keep the gritty style and character-driven stories that fans enjoy.
People are curious if other Reagan family members will show up. So far, there's no news about Tom Selleck (Frank Reagan), Bridget Moynahan (Erin Reagan), or Will Estes (Jamie Reagan) making guest appearances. But since Wahlberg has a strong bond with them, there's a chance they might appear.
How will Boston Blue fit into CBS's 2025-26 TV lineup?
CBS is expanding its crime drama lineup. They're adding Boston Blue alongside Sheriff Country, which is connected to Fire Country.
Because Blue Bloods has been popular, the network believes the spin-off will do well. This is like betting on a horse that's already won races.
They're not just starting new things. They're also saying yes to another season of Matlock.
Wahlberg told Us Weekly in December 2024:
"I love the character, and I certainly thought there were more stories to tell with him."
Boston Blue is set to premiere on two platforms: CBS and Paramount+.
