Of all the characters in the world of Daredevil, few antagonists have been more enigmatic than Madame Gao. First appearing on Netflix's Daredevil, with subsequent appearances on Iron Fist and The Defenders, the cryptic character always operated in the background, wielding power and information behind the guise. With Marvel restoring Daredevil: Born Again, fans wonder—could Madame Gao be back?

As her tale was seemingly concluded in The Defenders series, she is not likely to be part of the cast of Daredevil: Born Again. However, with her powerful affiliations with the Hand and New York City's underworld, her presence in the new series is not entirely inconceivable. But is it where Marvel is going with Born Again? Let's break it down.

The legacy of Madame Gao in the Daredevil Universe

Madame Gao's persona in Daredevil was one that captured the audience. With a firm hand and an air of authority and wisdom, she established her control over organized crime as a commander of the Hand. She was unlike other villains in the sense that she never used strength; instead, she employed her clever mind and cryptic measures to become one of the worst enemies Daredevil had to fight.

Her character's disappearance after The Defenders came to a close left many questions unanswered. Though some believe she was murdered or driven underground, there was never clear closure to her fate. Marvel has a precedent for reviving characters with unresolved storylines, so her return is not too far-fetched.

The direction of Daredevil: Born Again

Marvel Studios has already indicated that Daredevil: Born Again will represent a new iteration of Daredevil's narrative, with fresh creative choices informing the show. Although Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk (Kingpin) and Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock will be making a comeback, there are no other Netflix characters that are confirmed. As there has been a change in direction and tone, whether the show is going to lean into the Hand narrative or another one remains to be seen.

Still, Madame Gao's absence in recent Marvel productions indicates that the attention might be elsewhere. Marvel has brought in new villains, and the studio might focus on creating new conflicts instead of revisiting old ones. That being said, if Daredevil: Born Again delves into New York's underworld, Gao's return could naturally be part of the story.

Will Marvel bring Madame Gao back?

Marvel has been selective about which characters they bring back based on storytelling needs and audience needs. While Gao was popular, she was not as essential to Daredevil's arc as Kingpin or Bullseye. Unless Born Again has a direct reason to involve the Hand, her return remains unlikely—but not impossible.

Although there is no official update, if Marvel wants to keep up continuity with the Netflix universe while still creating a new narrative, a cameo or implied mention of Gao would be an option. Since she has lived so long and carried so much power in the underworld, her name might still carry some currency even if she doesn't show up in person.

There is no confirmation yet regarding Madame Gao's return in Daredevil: Born Again. Despite her role being among the most intriguing characters in the history of Daredevil, the future of Marvel seems to be leaning towards diverting attention to working on other storylines.

Yet, with the history of plot reversals by Marvel, it would not be best to eliminate the possibility of her return in Daredevil: Born Again. Either way, if she does or does not turn up, one thing is certain—her existence within the universe of Daredevil cannot be discounted.
