CBS police procedural drama series Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Blue (working title) is currently in development. After playing the character for 14 years, Donnie Wahlberg will once again return as Detective Danny Reagan on the new show. The series is expected to premiere in 2025-2026 according to a report in Deadline.

S.W.A.T. fame writers Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis pitched the idea for Boston Blue. The story will follow a family of police officers in Boston. The script was welcomed by the network, and CBS gave it a straight-to-series order according to Deadline.

Since Blue Bloods ended in December 2024, CBS Studios has been looking for ways to expand the Blue Bloods universe. They were even working with a range of spinoff options with Donnie Wahlberg and Tom Selleck.

Walberg, who hails from Boston, was the perfect actor to lead the spinoff show. In Boston Blue, his character will take on a new position in Boston P.D., far from his previous role in New York City. The show will be produced by CBS Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Television.

Sonnier and Margolis will act as showrunners and are also executive producers of the show. Bruckheimer, KristieAnne Reed, and Wahlberg will also be part of the show as executive producers.

Walberg was always open to the idea of a spinoff as Blue Bloods was ending last year. As per Collider, he said,

"There’s been a lot of talk about spin-offs, about various spin-offs, all types of concepts of spin-offs. I, for me personally, would say whatever happens next, if it’s done with the spirit of 'Blue Bloods' and done with the care that we tried to put into 'Blue Bloods' every week, it would be something that I would look forward to watching or being a part of either way."

The actor continued,

"I’ve heard stories of prequels, sequels, you name it. For me personally, I love the show. I’ve enjoyed working on it for 14 years and like I said, whatever comes next, as long as it has family at its core and the spirit of 'Blue Bloods,' then I’m all for it."

Boston Blue series in development

At the end of Blue Bloods, we find the Reagan family being compelled to deal with an attack on the police force and the city. In the last scene, Tom Selleck's character as the family patriarch, Frank Reagan, shares a heartfelt final message,

"You know, we’ve got a lot to be thankful for. And looking around this table, I gotta say, I couldn’t be more proud or grateful."

The new series will see Frank Reagan's son, Detective Danny Reagan, joining the Boston Police Department. He partners up with Detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family in Boston.

Fans of Blue Bloods are ecstatic to welcome the spinoff show and have taken to X to express their excitement to see Wahlberg’s character Danny back on screen.

One fan wrote,

"Excited for @DonnieWahlberg 's new show #BostonBlue , a spinoff of #BlueBoods."

Another netizen also shared their excitement.

"Yay!!!!! I'm so happy to see Donnie is back in a TV series. Yippee!!!"
