Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho's Oscar-winning movie Parasite turned many heads when it was released in 2019. While shows like Squid Game are popular from South Korea now and people are talking about foreign language shows, Joon-ho's movie might have paved the way for this.
At the 92nd Academy Awards, Parasite became the first non-English film to win the Best Picture Oscar. In addition, it won the Oscars for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film, making it a sweeping victory for the film and the crew.
After this momentous victory, Joon-ho announced a limited series on the movie with HBO, and Mark Ruffalo and Tilda Swinton were reported to star in the series. However, there was no further news about the same.
Recently, Joon-ho gave an update about the series at the premiere of his latest sci-fi film, Mickey 17.
Bong Joon-ho: Writers are 'working hard' on HBO's Parasite series
While the chances of an American Parasite series were starting to slim out, Bong Joon-ho finally has an update about the same.
Speaking to Deadline on the premiere of his latest sci-fi film, the filmmaker updated about the status of the HBO series:
''The writers are working very hard...the writing room of that show itself can be another TV show.''
Parasite starred Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Choo Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, and Park So-dam in the leading roles and follows the class divide in South Korean society. The movie was hailed for its social commentary on society.
There are no confirmed details about the release window of the series or the cast. Ruffalo never made an official statement about his case, and Swinton revealed that she has stepped away from the project.
After his Oscar-award-winning movie, Joon-ho is returning with Mickey17, which is based on Edward Ashton's 2022 novel Mickey17. The official synopsis of the film reads as follows:
"The unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Pattinson), has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living."
Mickey 17 stars Robert Pattinson, Mark Ruffalo, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Holliday Granger, and Toni Collette in the titular roles.
Talking about his upcoming film with the BBC, Joon-ho noted:
"Whether it's the future or going into outer space, humans must live genuinely human lives... The actors are incredible; there are amazing performances... I'm excited for everyone to see that.''
Theatrically released by Warner Bros. Pictures, Mickey 17 will be released in South Korea on February 28, 2025.
