Joe Barton discussed the Black Doves season 1 ending sequence in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The series creator said he wanted to tie all the loose ends in the season finale as he did not know whether the show would be renewed for a second season:

“I went out of my way to give everyone an ending. And partly that’s because, in the streaming age — luckily, we are coming back — but you never know when you’re writing it, whether you get second series or not.”
“And I’ve done things in the past where I’ve left [it] on big cliffhangers and then not come back. So I wanted to provide enough closure for the characters.”

Fortunately, Netflix has renewed the show for a second season, so the character journeys are going to continue. Joe Barton also talked about the Christmasy vibe at the end of the show, revealing he wanted to add a sentimental value to the ending:

“I have always thought of it as a Christmas show. And one of the things that you do is you want that [sentimental] ending. I always imagined finishing it around the Christmas dinner table, but with a bit of an edge, with a curious look right at the end.”

In the final shot of Black Doves season 1, Helen Webb stares into the camera and smirks. Barton disclosed that the look represents her dual personality as she is still hiding her truth from her family:

“That just means there’s still a duplicitousness about her. It’s to acknowledge that she is having Christmas dinner with her family and it’s a very happy family, but don’t forget that she’s still this other person and the two sides of her haven’t gone away.”

In the Black Doves season 1 finale, Helen and Sam discover the truth behind Jason’s death. They find out that Trent Clark, the son of a powerful crime family, killed Jason to cover up his accidental murder of the Chinese ambassador, Chen.

Trent had to silence Jason, who had recorded the incident. In one of the final scenes, Helen has a confrontation with Trent and his mother, Alex Clark. Sam then steps in to shoot the mother and the son, and save Helen. This changes everything for Sam, who had hoped to leave his violent life behind.

However, even though Helen avenges Jason, it does not bring her peace. She still struggles with her grief. Meanwhile, her husband, Wallace Webb, is about to become Prime Minister, which makes her job even harder. Helen will now have to face some more challenges, which will be explored in the second season.

All episodes of Black Doves season 1 are streaming on Netflix.
