Benedict Wong has been an important part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his debut as Wong in Doctor Strange in 2016. As per rumors, the actor might be getting his first project in the MCU as a lead with Strange Academy.
Strange Academy is a television series rumored to be in development for a few months. In the comics, Doctor Strange opens the titular school to train young sorcerers. The fictional school is situated in New Orleans and first appears in the comics in 2020.
As per an industry insider, Benedict Wong is expected to lead the TV series, while Benedict Cumberbatch will make a cameo appearance as Doctor Strange. Wong currently holds the position of Sorcerer Supreme in the MCU.
Benedict Wong is rumored to reprise his role as Wong in Strange Academy
The claims of Benedict Wong appearing in Strange Academy have been made by scooper @MyTimeToShineH on X (formerly Twitter). The account is known for providing insider information about various shows and films, especially the MCU.
In a post shared with their subscribers, @MyTimeToShineH wrote that Benedict Wong will be returning as Wong in Strange Academy, and if Benedict Cumberbatch also returns, he will have a brief role in the show. The post read:
“Benedict Wong is confirmed to star in Strange Academy. If Benedict Cumberbatch will be in it, it will be a small role. Right now he’s not confirmed to return.”
While the rumors have gotten fans excited, Marvel has not yet officially announced Strange Academy. The show was rumored to be in development in December 2024. Neither the studio nor Wong has confirmed the project or his participation in it.
In the comics, Strange Academy is a school set up by Doctor Strange to teach magic skills and sorcery to young minds. Students from various worlds can attend the school, including Asgardians, vampires, and even the son of Doctor Strange’s arch-enemy, Dormammu.
Wong is a faculty member at the school. Other superheroes who have served as teachers include Scarlet Witch, The Ancient One, Doctor Voodoo, and Sleepwalker. The school debuted in March 2020 with the comic Strange Academy Vol. 1, created by Skottie Young and Humberto Ramos.
Benedict Wong’s journey in the MCU
The actor first appeared in the franchise in 2016, playing Doctor Strange’s friend Wong. He helped Dr. Stephen Strange learn magic and fight enemies like Kaecilius and Dormammu. The magician later became the Sorcerer Supreme after the Ancient One.
Wong then made appearances in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), fighting Thanos alongside other heroes. His story continued in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), where he battled Abomination and investigated a mystery about the Ten Rings.
He once again supported Dr. Strange in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness (2022). Wong was then seen in Disney+’s She-Hulk in 2022 and voiced his animated character in What If...? Outside of the MCU, the actor is known for his roles in the films Nine Days and The Martian.
