When Beef premiered on Netflix in 2023, it won over the audience with its relatable themes, layered characters, and dark comedy. The comedy-drama was initially billed as a limited series, but the critical acclaim and commercial success made the streamer renew it for a second season.
The show is set to follow an anthology format now, with a fresh storyline and an entirely new set of cast joining the second chapter. The upcoming season is being led by Carey Mulligan, known for her roles in the films The Great Gatsby and Promising Young Woman.
She is joined by Moon Knight actor Oscar Isaac, who plays the male lead. In a recent interview, Mulligan opened up about Beef season 2, revealing the team has already started filming. She also talked about her experience of working with Isaac as the show marks their third project together.
Carey Mulligan confirms Beef season 2 has begun filming in Los Angeles
Carey Mulligan had a chat with Screen Rant at the Sundance Film Festival, where she confirmed Beef season 2 has gone into production in Los Angeles. She further discussed her third collaboration with Oscar Isaac, as the pair previously worked together on the 2011 action drama Drive and the 2013 comedy-drama film Inside Llewyn Davis.
Mulligan said:
“It's so funny. Yes, it's our third thing. We did Drive together, then we did Inside Llewyn Davis, and then this is our sort of triptych or whatever. It's nice.”
“We're shooting in LA, and that's where we shot Drive and where we first met. So, we do have a lot of history, me and Oscar. This is different. That's all I can say.”
Apart from Mulligan and Isaac, Beef season 2 stars Riverdale alum Charles Melton, Minari actress Youn Yuh-jung, Priscilla star Cailee Spaeny, and Parasite actor Youn Yuh-jung. The character names have not been disclosed yet.
What is Beef season 2 about?
The first season starred Steven Yeun and Ali Wong as Danny Cho and Amy Lau, respectively. Danny and Amy are two strangers who get embroiled in a road rage incident, after which their lives get entangled, leading to chaos, frustration, and heartfelt moments.
The series earned wide critical acclaim and won eight Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress for Yeun and Wong and Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
The official synopsis for the second installment reads:
“A young couple witnesses an alarming fight between their boss and his wife, triggering chess moves of favors and coercion in the elitist world of a country club and its Korean billionaire owner.”
Contrary to the debut installment, which features 10 episodes, season 2 is set to comprise eight 30-minute episodes. Series creator Lee Sung Jin serves as the showrunner and executive producer in the upcoming season as well.
In another interview, Carey Mulligan teased that season 2 will have a new story. Netflix has yet to announce the release date for the second season.
All episodes of Beef season 1 are available to stream on Netflix.
