Ahead of the Andor Season 2 premiere on April 22, 2025, showrunner Tony Gilroy has shared a disappointing update about his future with the Star Wars franchise.
In a recent interview with Collider, Gilroy shared his future plans to step away from the Star Wars franchise after the upcoming and final chapter. He said:
''It’s not really part of my plan. I've been peripherally involved for 10 years and intensely involved for six years, so that's a pretty big chunk of my life. There are other things to do. I think when it's done, I will have left a pretty big piece of Star Wars real estate behind. I’m feeling guilty about not chipping in.''
Talking about his future plans, he added:
''There’s a movie I’m trying to make. I want to direct. I’d like to direct before I forget how. So, I have a movie I’m trying to get off. I'm in a whole other world again. I'm back out there with my hat in my hand, trying to raise money.''
Gilroy entered the Star Wars franchise in 2016, as co-screenplay writer of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a prequel to the 1977 classic film of the franchise. The movie became a commercial success and would later pave the way for the Disney+ show, Andor.
Andor Season 2 is likely to be Tony Gilroy's last Star Wars project
Following the success of Rogue One, Tony Gilroy returned to the franchise in 2019 to work as the showrunner and writer on Andor, a prequel series to the 2016 movie.
Rogue One essentially paved the way for many independent Star Wars projects without the Jedi or the Skywalker storylines, which still proved to be a commercial success.
The show follows the journey of Cassian, Rogue One's protagonist, before the events of the movie, as he joins the Rebel Alliance to wage a war against the Galactic Empire. The upcoming Season 2 will be more in tune with the film's events and will cover five years of Cassian's life.
While the upcoming chapter will likely be Gilroy's last venture with the franchise, a special re-watch party for Season 1 will be featured on YouTube on Thursday, March 13, at 12 p.m. PT/3 p.m. ET.
Gilroy, along with many guests, are scheduled to appear for a live re-watching of the previous season. During the event, they will and address fan questions.
Season 2 will premiere on Disney+ on April 22, 2025, with the first three episodes.
