HBO's dystopian survival series The Last Of Us returned with Season 2, which also introduced many new characters.
Actress Isabela Merced, a beloved video game character, Bella Ramsey's Ellie's best friend, was introduced as Dina in the Season 2 premiere. Talking about her character in Season 2, Merced noted (via Max on YouTube):
''Dina, my character, is very responsible. She's very smart, she's also very caring and light-hearted.''
While Dina and Ellie start as friends, their relationship gradually changes and becomes more intimate. The dance sequence at the end of The Last Of Us Season 2 premiere proves this. Talking about her character's dynamic with Ellie, Merced added:
''Her relationship with Ellie is very special. She cares for Ellie a lot and knows Ellie a little bit better than Ellie may know herself and I think it's really cool to see them bring out the good in each other.''
HBO's survival drama series, which debuted in January 2023, is based on a popular video game of the same name. The show follows Pedro Pascal's Joel and Ramsey's Ellie as they try to survive after a deadly fungal virus has wiped out most of the country's population.

Isabela Merced opens up about her character in The Last Of Us Season 2
The Last Of Us Season 2, which premiered its first episode on April 13, 2025, follows a five-year time jump in Joel and Ellie's story, who are now living in Wyoming with Tommy and Maria.
Their new community also introduced many new characters, one of whom is Merced's Dina. A beloved character from the video game, the premiere saw her close relationship with Ellie, especially after Ellie's falling out with Joel.
While the fans' reactions to the Season 2 premiere were mixed, they praised the dance sequence between Ellie and Dina, which was closely adapted from the video game. Talking about the dance sequence, Merced told Vogue recently:
"Having that [video game's] knowledge and walking around the set, looking and knowing all the details, was an honor. Even the dance scene is almost the same as in the video game, shot-for-shot.”
Merced was happy to play a bis*xual character on-screen, as she added:
''I think Dina being bis*xual is also an interesting dynamic that I haven’t seen as much explored in the media. That they’re both protagonists in the series, as an ensemble, and that they’re represented in this way, is great.”
The Last Of Us Season 2 airs weekly episodes on HBO every Sunday.
