According to an exclusive report by Deadline, ABC's latest comedy series, Shifting Gears, might be discontinued after Season 1, despite its pilot being the highest streamed in six years.

While ABC has yet to officially confirm the renewals, the news of the network discontinuing this comedy series is alleged for now, the fate seems likely, considering an expensive cast and decline in the Season 1 finale ratings.

Shifting Gears premiered on January 8, 2025, with a historic opening: 6.1 million live and same-day viewers, the network's first in six years. But this victory was short-lived and the numbers went down to 3.8 million same-day viewers (for the finale).

The comedy's inability to retain its viewers might be fateful and the network might not renew it for a sophomore season.

In addition, the comedy series, created by Julie Thacker Scully and Mike Scully through 20th Television, stars an A-list cast, including Tim Allen, Kat Dennings, Seann William Scott, Daryl Chill Mitchell, and many more, who might be too expensive considering the decreasing numbers.

More on the show's future in our story.

Shifting Gears might not get a Season 2 renewal at ABC: Reports

Unlike ABC's hit comedy series, Abbott Elementary, which was earlier renewed for Season 5 (even before the Season 4 finale), and debutant, High Potential, which was also renewed for Season 2, after a stellar increase in numbers for the finale, the fate of Shifting Gears seems dreadful.

Considering that both High Potential and Shifting Gears started as comedies on the network, the former performed exceptionally well in terms of increasing viewership. Starting with 3.59 million viewers for the Pilot, approximately half of Shifting Gears, the comedy managed to increase it to 5.16 million by the finale, which explains its Season 2 renewal.

On the other hand, Shifting Gears has seen a downward growth in ratings, which might mean that the series' future is unsafe. But everything is not lost, as ABC does not have any more comedies lined up for now. With its long-running sitcom The Conners departing the network after seven seasons, ABC might consider renewing Shifting Gears for another season.

But for now, the comedy show's future seems bleak, and even delayed views do not make a case for it. If that were the case, fans would likely not get the answers to the pressing questions left in the finale, and they would bid farewell to Matt and Riley forever.
