Good news for Abbott Elementary fans! ABC has officially renewed the series for Season 5.
The beloved sitcom, which premiered in 2021, follows an underfunded public school in Philadelphia, where the teachers and staff provide the students with the best education possible with limited resources.
The show is currently in Season 4, after it returned on January 8, following a winter break.
The show has enjoyed a beloved fanbase and high ratings on ABC and Hulu, which doesn't make the Season 5 early renewal surprising.
Abbott Elementary was nominated for 24 Primetime Emmy Awards and won four, including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Quinta Brunson. It also received three Golden Globe Awards in 2023.
The show was recently nominated for two Golden Globes, with Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series—Musical or Comedy for Brunson and Best Television Series—Musical or Comedy.
The sitcom stars Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Chris Perfetti, and William Stanford Davis in the titular roles.
ABC renews Abbott Elementary with a sweet video on Instagram
While the news of the show's renewal for Season 5 is happy enough, the announcement was as adorable. The network posted a video of the Abbott Elementary children counting down to five to announce that the beloved show will return for another season.
It seems like an early renewal has become a tradition between the show and the network, as once again, the sitcom is the first series to renew for ABC's 2025-26 schedule.
The show's return on January 8, 2025, was also special because it was a crossover episode with FXX's It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which gained a high rating of 8.05 million on Hulu. High ratings were also observed in the first seven days after its return on the network. In addition, its high rewatch value makes it a fan favorite, suitable for every kind of audience.
The upcoming episode for Abbott Elementary Season 4 will be released on January 22, 2025, and it will follow the teachers with a new challenge, where they will adopt hybrid learning after students cannot attend due to a city-wide bus strike.
The show has always brought up the difficulties students and teachers face when learning in an underfunded school, and the next episode picks up a new normal that almost all schools practiced during the pandemic.
The episode will be reminiscent of the challenges of online learning, a real-world event experienced by all, and it would be interesting to see Abbott Elementary's hilarious take on it.
Tune into Season 4, Episode 11, on January 22, 2025.
