Hulu has officially cancelled the much awaited TV adaptation of the fantasy romantic series A Court of Thorns and Roses. Written by Sarah J. Maas, the series is immensely popular and was intended to make Hulu its book-to-screen home. The show was in the development stage at the OTT platform under the Disney 20th Television banner. However, the development has been stagnant for years since the initial announcement in 2021.

A Court of Thorns and Roses series was to be co-written by Maas and Ronald D. Moore, creator of Outlander. The script discussions were put on hold during the writers and actors strike of summer 2023. There have been several rumors floating around since then about the possible demise of the show on the platform. Though A Court of Thorns and Roses show was in development at Disney for four years, it looks like they have reached an impasse and won’t be moving forward.

Disney is currently working on other fantasy TV shows, which are in development and production stages, including the widely popular Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Other platforms, such as HBO with Game of Thrones, Netflix with The Witcher, and Amazon Prime Video with The Wheel of Time and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, have found favorable outcomes with the fantasy genre. The success could be attributed to the fact that they already come with a fan following.

There are rumors that Mass could look into other studios for the adaptation of her beloved books once the rights have expired with Disney’s 20th Television in late summer 2025.

Fans of the books have taken to X to share their disappointment and hope that another platform may pick it up soon.

About A Court of Thorns and Roses

A Court of Thorns and Roses is a novel series that follows 19-year-old huntress Feyre Archeron, who kills a wolf in the woods, and a beast-like creature appears to demand retribution. She is kidnapped and brought to the mystical land of Prythian by one of the High Lords of Prythian, Tamlin.

The first book in the series, which was released in May 2015, focuses on her adventures within her grand love story. The series' subsequent installments, A Court of Mist and Fury, A Court of Wings and Ruin, A Court of Frost and Starlight, and A Court of Silver Flames, carry on her story.

The series has sold more than 13 million copies. Mass is currently also working on the sixth book in the series.
