Anson Mount has impressed the audience with his performance as Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The actor first played the role in Star Trek: Discovery season 2 before getting his own spin-off series that has been on air since 2022 on Paramount+.
Mount has brought a fresh take on the iconic character, previously played by Jeffrey Hunter and Bruce Greenwood in various Star Trek media franchises.
When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered in 2022, Anson Mount had an interview with Entertainment Weekly, where he talked about how the character has changed his life. Opening up about the love he received for playing Christopher Pike, the actor said:
“It was all kind of mind-boggling to me, to be quite honest. I've never had a reaction like that to anything that I've done, and the results of that response have literally changed my life.”
Anson Mount once talked about the impact of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds on his life
In his interview, Anson Mount revealed that Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds helped him professionally and personally. He got the projects at a time when actors were struggling due to the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. The job made him stable enough to think about having a family:
“It not only gave me a job during a very difficult time for actors, but it gave me the brevity and the opportunity to have a family, and the courage to have to go forward with having a family. Not every actor is in that position. When you choose to go this path, that is a luxury, not a given.”
Anson Mount has come a long way in the sci-fi franchise and continues to earn praise for his nuanced performance. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has already been renewed for a third and fourth season, with Mount confirmed to reprise his role as Christopher Pike.
Pike is the captain of the USS Enterprise. In the original 1960s series, the character was played by Jeffrey Hunter, while actor Bruce Greenwood portrayed it in the 2009 film Star Trek and its 2013 sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness.
While the original version of the character was seen as authoritative and unfriendly, Mount’s version of Pike is loved for his empathetic and kind personality while still possessing leadership qualities. Meanwhile, Pike already knows he is destined to suffer a tragic fate, which makes him a layered character.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set in the 23rd century and revolves around the crew of the USS Enterprise, led by Pike. The events depicted in the show take place ten years before those of the original series. Every episode follows the crew as they explore some new worlds.
Apart from Mount, the show stars Jess Bush as Christine Chapel, Ethan Peck as Spock, Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura, Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas, Bruce Horak as Hemmer, Martin Quinn as Montgomery Scott, Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley/Number One, and Babs Olusanmokun as Joseph M'Benga.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 will premiere sometime in 2025. The first two seasons are available to stream on Paramount+.
