After the debut season of Squid Game ended back in 2021, it was an excruciatingly long wait comprising three years before the next installment is finally ready to hit the screens. According to Netflix, Squid Game season 2 will premiere on December 26, 2024, on the streaming platform giant.

In the upcoming installment, protagonist Gi-Hun will reprise his role once again and will find his way back into the games. The debut season ended with him making a crucial decision to not immigrate to the United States and this time he shall be back with renewed vigor to expose the game itself and those who run it.
Several new cast members will be joining the ensemble. Here's everything we know.
What's the latest buzz about Squid Game season 2?
Squid Game season 2 will once again bring back the familiar character of Seong Gi-Hun, played by actor Lee Jung-jae.
However, according to Tudum by Netflix, his usual optimistic and easy-going demeanor will no longer be characteristic of him, and he will instead navigate the sinister world of the games with a comparatively hardened and relentless approach.
This is natural given that he had to undergo numerous traumatic incidents during the debut season, including the death of his childhood friend by his hand during the finale.
The trailer confirmed the long-held fan suspicion that the mysterious Front Man will once again return. The Front Man is the masked individual pulling the strings from behind the scenes and is played by actor Lee Byung-hun. It is still unclear what his background is.
The official synopsis of Squid Game season 2 reads:
"Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 gave up going to the States and comes back with a new resolution in his mind, Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won. Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organisation proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it."
Showrunner opens up about Squid Game season 2
Squid Game season 2 is once again helmed by Hwang Dong-hyuk who is the writer, director, and executive producer of the show. Speaking about Gi-hun's controversial decision to once again return to the brutal games, he recently stated to Tudum:
"He wants to return to a ‘normal’ so-called life. (But) there’s something inside him that has already been broken where he cannot return to the way he was before, he understands … that he has changed in a way where (that’s) no longer possible. That is why I believe that character decides to return (to Squid Game), turn away from (his daughter), and begin this further journey."
The previous season of Squid Game is available for streaming exclusively on Netflix.
