Netflix has officially announced the title of the first-ever Stranger Things spin-off. The new show will be titled Stranger Things: Tales from '85. This is a big move towards the expansion of the Stranger Things universe, which has been one of Netflix's most successful franchises. The spin-off will be an animated show, a medium that the creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, have long desired to explore.

As reported by Netflix, the Duffer Brothers are executive producers on the show, joined by Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen. The series will have a new spin while still being grounded in the original Hawkins, Indiana world. The news follows years of rumors surrounding potential spin-offs, such as reports of stories centered on fan-favorite characters like Eleven.

But the creators have explained that this new series will be quite distinct from the original, both in terms of style and storytelling strategy. Netflix has been said to have ordered the animated series for two seasons upfront, indicating great faith in the project's potential.

Stranger Things: Tales from '85 – What do we know

Series format and creative team

Stranger Things: Tales from '85 will be an animated show. The Duffer Brothers, who created the original Stranger Things, are executive producers on the show. They are accompanied by Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen, who have also worked on the main series. The animation is being created by Eric Robles and his crew, who have been praised by the Duffers for their work on the scripts and artwork.

The creators have confirmed that they were drawing from Saturday morning cartoons in their youth, and they hope to capture that same energy and bring it into the new show. The show has been said to be "1,000% different" from the original Stranger Things, with a focus on storytelling that connects to the Stranger Things world but with a different style and approach to narrative.

Story and setting

Although the details of the plot have not been discussed, the title Tales from '85 indicates that the series will take place in or around 1985, continuing the retro-feel that has characterized Stranger Things.

The series is said to follow new characters and new stories within the existing universe, rather than on established core characters of the live-action series. The working title for the series was "Project Mirkwood," named after a road outside the Hawkins National Laboratory, suggesting the show will have some connections to known places.

The future of the Stranger Things franchise

The release of Stranger Things: Tales from '85 is just one part of a larger effort to build out the Stranger Things universe. Netflix and the Duffer Brothers have announced that several spin-offs are in production. These shows come on top of the fifth and final season of the flagship series, as well as a stage play called Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which will debut on Broadway.

The Duffer Brothers have insisted that any new work will have the same quality and originality that fans are used to. They have indicated that they are very engaged in each spin-off and that each needs to have its own reason to be around. The intention is not to repeat but to have each addition to the franchise be something fresh and interesting.

Netflix's up-front order for two seasons of the animated spin-off indicates confident faith in Stranger Things' sustained popularity. The franchise has been a huge success for the platform since its initial release in 2016, attracting huge viewing figures and praise from critics alike.

With the flagship series approaching its conclusion, the spin-off and other developments are likely to keep fans hooked with fresh stories and characters from Hawkins' universe.
