NCIS Season 22 Episode 16, titled 'Ladies Night,' saw the team's men and women head their separate ways for a quiet Friday night when they are called for an arsonist case.
After they initially discover that Jennifer Garcia has been murdered, they arrest her boyfriend, Daniel, who had circumstantial evidence pointing towards him. Knight also met with a firefighter while at the crime scene, and the two later decided to be in touch.
After the case is seemingly closed, Kasie, Knight, and Robin head to their pre-planned ladies' night, which eventually turns into a murder investigation, and they find new clues suggesting Dan is not the killer.
Here is the complete recap of NCIS Season 22 Episode 16.
NCIS Season 22 Episode 16 recap: Jennifer Garcia died in a building fire
The last episode's case revolved around Jennifer Garcia, a petty officer, who was in a local antique store taking pictures of the items for the store's website. While her boyfriend, Daniel, managed to escape, she perished in the store fire.
When the team arrives on the scene, they discover wound marks around Jennifer's body, suggesting somebody strangled her. In addition, they also found a lighter at the crime scene with Dan's initials, suggesting that he murdered his girlfriend.
Initially, Dan denies the team's accusations, but after their texts are leaked, he confesses that they were in a fight because he had forgotten their anniversary. He eventually makes it up to Jen by gifting her a necklace.
But when the team insinuates that he killed her girlfriend, he finally confesses to the crime and is put in jail.
NCIS Season 22 Episode 16: The team's ladies' night turns into a murder investigation
After Dan is arrested, the NCIS ladies head to their night out, which starts with a kiln workshop at a pottery studio. While Robin encourages the two to loosen a bit, Kasie and Knight are still engrossed with Jen's case.
Meanwhile, they receive an autopsy report revealing that the coroners found a melted necklace on Jen's body, which hints that she was wearing it when she died. To test a theory, Kasie puts her own necklace in the hot kiln to see how it will melt, and proving her right, it does not match the photo, confirming that somebody (later it turns out to be Dan) planted it on her after she died.
While the girls are thrown out of the pottery class after their experiment, they head to a wine tasting. Kasie and Knight are still obsessed with Jen's case. They think Dan is pretending to be the killer. They review some more photos, and they notice a few things rearranged, hinting that somebody else was there except Jen and Dan.
NCIS Season 22 Episode 16: Dan's confession leads the team to the actual killer
While the ladies did their own investigation, NCIS men also discovered that Dan was at a bar during the fire, as his phone records suggest. They question him in jail, and he reveals that he placed the lighter and the necklace to make it look like he is the killer.
He did this because he was drinking with an old friend in the bar during the fire. If the police had found that he was out drinking on his parole, it would not have gone badly for his friend, so he pretended to be his girlfriend's killer.
After Dan's confession, the team heads to the crime scene and discovers that the store's lock was picked and items were missing from the safe, suggesting that somebody was attempting a robbery.
They finally close in on the killer after matching handprints from Jen's wounds, who turns out to be none other than the firefighter who was interested in Knight. He learned about some rare stamps and books and came to steal them. When Jen caught him, he burned the place to the ground. The team finally arrests him for Jen's murder.
