NCIS: Origins premiere opened a brand new storyline about Austin Stowell's Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (young version), and Mariel Molino's Special Agent Lala Dominguez.
While Lala is not mentioned in the parent show NCIS, she is established as an important person in Gibbs' past as Mark Harmon's Older Gibbs recalls in the premiere,
“This is a story I don’t tell…this is the story… of her.''
'Her' is quickly revealed as Lala, and the camera cuts to her character. Just like that, the premiere of NCIS: Origins sets the future for Gibbs and Lala's relationship.
While we see moments between them as the story progresses, fans do not know how important she is or what happened between her and Gibbs.
Sparks flew between Gibbs and Lala in an undercover operation in NCIS: Origins
While the opening scene of Episode 6, 'Incognito,' showed older Gibbs recalling that Lala once confided in him about feeling trapped in a box, the episode saw them pairing up for an undercover operation on a case.
Since this was Gibbs' first undercover mission in NCIS: Origins, where he had to pose as the man buying the stolen Navy intel, Lala went with him as his 'hot' date.
While the two had their eyes on the seller, there was no denying that sparks were flying between them. Since Episode 1 has already established Gibbs' close, albeit mysterious, relationship with Lala, fans are wondering what exactly happened between the two.
The sudden embrace, and the cupping of faces all suggest that the two are headed for a romance, which will presumably be tainted with tragedy since Gibbs has not talked about 'her' with anybody else for decades.
However, while the two of them work the mission out triumphantly, Lala overhears in the NIS locker room about how hot she looked in the dress for her undercover. Seemingly, this is the 'box' she feels trapped inside. Earlier, Frank also called her a “workplace distraction” for Gibbs.
Will Gibbs and Lala's growing relationship be tainted by the truth about Pedro Hernandez in NCIS: Origins?
NCIS: Origins Episode 9 revealed a major storyline about Gibbs' past, where he got his revenge by killing Reynosa Cartel member, Pedro Hernandez, who killed his wife and daughter.
The episode saw the team investigating the case of a woman who went missing after a night of clubbing. The connection is made to Gibbs' past when the Reynosa Cartel is traced back to trafficking and kidnapping women.
While Lala feels responsible for not bringing Pedro to justice, Gibbs does not break his silence that he has already killed the man.
Co-showrunner, David J. North, discussed Gibbs' motives on NCIS: Origins in an interview with Parade,
“Gibbs’ silence there, although I think we could all understand why he didn't tell her, that becomes a huge complication for Lala and their relationship, which first and foremost has to be built on trust,”
While Gibbs does not reveal the truth to Lala, she eventually gets to know that Pedro has been dead for six months when she interrogates a cartel member. She then puts two and two together and figures that Gibbs is responsible for Pedro's death.
While the aftermath of this revelation is yet to be seen in the next episode, Gibbs' hiding the truth about Pedro's death is bound to taint his relationship with Lala. Fans will have to wait for the dire future of this relationship going forward.
