NCIS: Origins episode 9 recap: Gibbs hunts for Pedro Hernandez
NCIS: Origins episode 9 starts with a flashback to six months before Gibbs becomes an NIS agent. He is in his small and empty apartment, still grieving his family’s death. He spends all his time going over evidence about Pedro Hernandez, the man who could be responsible for the murder.
Gibbs struggles to eat, sleep, or think about anything else other than finding Hernandez. In the present, Gibbs and Special Agent Lala Dominguez question a drunk sailor. They soon discover that the sailor is linked to the disappearance of Dana Rogers, a Navy corpsman.
As they continue to investigate, the two uncover the case’s connection to a human trafficking ring controlled by the Reynosa cartel, which operates out of Tijuana, Mexico. This cartel is connected to Hernandez and can bring Gibbs closer to the man he has been hunting.
Gibbs and Lala learn that Dana was last seen at a nightclub in Mexico. Lala, who is half-Mexican, has a personal connection to the region and has been involved in efforts to track down the cartel for months.
Gibbs and Lala’s trip to Mexico in NCIS: Origins
When their boss, Mike Franks, takes the day off, Gibbs and Lala take the lead on the case. The clues point them to a gas station in Mexico, which is said to be the base for the cartel’s trafficking operation.
Gibbs and Lala head to Tijuana, where they team up with a local officer to raid the gas station. Lala acts as a decoy to distract the guards, while Gibbs and the others rescue Dana and several other victims. However, Hernandez is nowhere to be found.
Is Gibbs able to find out who killed his wife and daughter in NCIS: Origins?
When Gibbs and Lala are unable to find Hernandez, it is revealed that the man was killed six months ago by a sniper. The timeline suggests that Gibbs was the sniper who shot Hernandez since he murdered his family.
The revelation finally brings closure to the plot that has haunted Gibbs through the course of NCIS: Origins. He had already taken justice into his own hands, and now, the team knows the truth.
Fans of the original NCIS will recognize this moment from the season 3 episode Hiatus, where Gibbs takes revenge on Hernandez for murdering his wife and daughter. In NCIS: Origins, the focus is on how Gibbs tracked Hernandez and planned the killing.
However, while Gibbs gets closure, it also creates a rift between him and Lala. Lala had spent months searching for Hernandez, only to learn that Gibbs had already eliminated the man, and was hiding the truth from the team. This puts strain on their partnership, which could be explored in future episodes.
NCIS: Origins airs new episodes on CBS on Mondays.
