NCIS: Los Angeles was the first spin-off of the original NCIS franchise. Since its premiere in September 2009, the show has experienced several cast departures. Throughout its 14-season run, the show has said goodbye to many key characters, including Detective Marty Deeks, played by Eric Christian Olsen.

When NCIS: Los Angeles announced its wrap-up in 2023, after 14 seasons, fans had to say goodbye to a whole host of characters, but none hit home as much as the departure of Marty Deeks. To the majority of fans, he was the best part of the police procedural. His action, comedic humor, and wit made him a fan favorite.

Here's why Marty Deeks was a fan-favorite in NCIS: Los Angeles and needs to come back to the franchise.

Eric Christian Olsen made his debut in NCIS: Los Angeles as Marty Deeks in Season 1 as a guest character. He was introduced as an undercover agent trying to infiltrate a drug-smuggling ring.

When the team's investigation overlapped with his undercover operation, he joined hands with them in taking down the ring. Later, at the end of the episode Hand-to-Hand, he officially accepts the position of an NCIS/LAPD liaison officer on the team. His sarcastic, humorous, and witty presence made his promotion from a guest star to a recurring character pretty smooth.

Deeks had a special position on the team as a liaison officer, bringing forward the best of both the LAPD and the NCIS. However, his position as a liaison officer did mean that the team considered him an "outsider" at the start and did not warm up to him easily.

Deeks lacked the formal training that came with being a part of the NCIS team, making him an outsider in the team's eyes. However, it doesn't take long for Deeks to get the team to warm up to him after he proves his loyalty to them. His laid-back attitude, tendency to be the comedic relief, and sarcastic jokes make him a beloved part of the team at NCIS: Los Angeles.

Hetty was the one responsible for Deeks' joining the team. She also reveals that she had been watching him for some time and wanted to recruit him into the team. Despite Deeks' close relationship with Hetty, he did not hold back when calling out her decisions if he felt the need to.

Deeks' character underwent a massive transformation throughout his tenure on the show. He started out as a character who offered great comedic relief, but by Season 14, his character had undergone a total transformation. He grew into a man who was fearlessly vulnerable and had a family with Kensi. In conversation with TV Insider, Olsen talked about Deeks' journey

"Deeks’ emotional growth over the course of the series was from compartmentalized, unemotional, self-preservation to fearless vulnerability."

Even though Deeks was written off the show in NCIS: Los Angeles, it makes sense to bring back the fan-favorite character to the franchise, even in some other team.

Why Marty Deeks will fit well, even with another NCIS team

Generally considered, Marty Deeks is a likable character. He has a great sense of humor and has proved he can fit well with other teams in previous crossover episodes. An example would be the three-way crossover between NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS, and NCIS: Hawai'i. Deeks is a versatile character, able to fit into other teams seamlessly.

His duo with Nick Torres, played by Wilmer Valderrama, was unexpectedly iconic and loved by fans. Even though both of them are polar opposites of each other, Marty being a social being and Nick being a lone wolf, they find a smooth middle ground, making a heart-warming duo.

Although, however much we wish that NCIS: Los Angeles would bring back this fan-favorite character, it is all dependent on the network and the actor. Eric Christian Olsen, in 2024, confirmed that he will not be returning to the NCIS franchise.

After acting in front of the camera, Eric Christian Olsen moved behind it. After the NCIS: Los Angeles ended back in 2023, Olsen has been serving as an executive producer in the Matlock reboot.

Since Olsen is still working with the CBS network, he was asked about his potential return to the NCIS franchise. He replied that the probability of that happening was "not so much". Olsen prefers

"these really good, dramatic or funny scenes [on Matlock], because they’re so beautiful."

Even though the chances of Eric Christian Olsen making a comeback to the NCIS franchise are very less, it doesn't stop fans from hoping.
