Mythic Quest is making a comeback after a two-year break, and we're all excited for Season 4! This show, which is the love child of Megan Ganz, Charlie Day, and Rob McElhenney from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, has been keeping us laughing with its clever take on the game development world.

Season 3 had us all glued to our screens from November 11, 2022, up until early 2023. It brought some big changes for our favorite characters, like Ian (played by Rob McElhenney) and Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) starting their own gig, GrimPop, and David (David Hornsby) dealing with the pressure of running Mythic Quest solo. There was a lot to absorb with all the drama and new beginnings.

But don't worry if you're a bit fuzzy on the details, because we've got you covered with a refresher for what happened in Mythic Quest Season 3. That way, you'll be all set for the new season as it hits our screens on January 29, 2025.

Ian and Poppy's new venture GrimPop

The major change in Season 3 of Mythic Quest was when Ian and Poppy decided to leave the company and start their own thing, GrimPop, which was all about Poppy's big project called Hera. Even though Hera was well made, it just wasn't as fun as the games they used to work on together.

Meanwhile, Dana (played by Imani Hakim) started learning from them and suggested they check out Playpen, which was a game where people could build their stuff, kind of like Roblox.

At first, Poppy wasn't too keen on the idea, but they made it their main focus. Ian had a tough time letting go of Mythic Quest. He kept butting in on their business, crashing their Christmas party, and messing with David's plans for a movie.

Danny Cox from Collider pointed out,

“It becomes increasingly clear that Ian and Poppy can only leave so much of their past behind.”

But as time went on, Ian and Poppy figured out that they were better together, playing to each other's strengths instead of fighting over the spotlight.

Power struggles and shifting roles at Mythic Quest

Back at the Mythic Quest offices, David was having a tough time stepping into the leadership shoes without Ian and Poppy by his side. His idea to turn their game into a blockbuster movie didn't catch on, and now he was unsure about what was next for the company.

On the bright side, Jo had come through for him. Jessie Ennis, who plays Jo, nailed it, becoming his trusty second-in-command. She's got that no-nonsense, get-things-done attitude. So Brad (played by Danny Pudi) gets out of the slammer and starts working at Mythic Quest. But it's not what you'd think—he's pretending to be all on the straight and narrow, playing janitor.

But sneaky devil that he is, he's coaching Rachel (Ashly Burch) on how to make bank with the company's games. Rachel turns out to be a natural at it, even though she didn't see it coming. This situation throws their relationship for a loop and has Rachel second-guessing where she's headed.

Then there's Carol (Naomi Ekperigin), who just got a big promotion to be in charge of all things diversity and inclusion. She's got the title, yet she can't do much to change anything. She's feeling pretty blue about it, too, because she's stuck in the same old company rigmarole as David.

Ian and Poppy’s relationship on Mythic Quest

Mythic Quest's Episode 7 of Season 3, "Sarian," was a standout because it gave us much-needed background on how Ian and Poppy started working together. It showed us Ian's time at school and how much he leaned on making up stories to get by. On the flip side, Poppy's love for video games didn't quite line up with what her mom wanted. They clicked because both knew what it felt like to not be understood.

But things got worse when Ian finally said he didn't want to keep working on Hera. This reflected the differences in how they saw their projects and what they wanted to do. The season grew the main characters, and by the end, it was clear that they had to come to terms with their issues.

When Ian and Poppy finally figured out that they complemented each other perfectly—she was the one who made stuff happen and he had all the big ideas—it was like everything fell into place. They had this big moment where they realized they were stronger together, which was a real turning point for the show.

Playpen didn't quite manage to win over the big investors, and Mythic Quest was starting to lose its mojo. Ian and Poppy weren't about to give up. They came up with a plan to breathe life into the old game by joining forces. But just as they thought they had it all figured out, a new challenger appears on the scene.

Dana, who was their apprentice, had had enough of playing second fiddle. She teamed up with Brad and Jo to start their own gaming business, which threw a wrench into Ian and Poppy's plans.

Apple TV+ is getting in on the action with Side Quests, a spin-off show that's going into the world of Mythic Quest even more.
