Shark Tank mentor Jamie Kern Lima discusses motivation with the "Queen of motivation," Mel Robbins
Shark Tank mentor and investor Jamie Kern Lima recently shared a clip from her latest podcast episode, Mel Robbins: How to Reset Your Habits and Make Them Stick! The Secrets That Actually Work! on her Instagram.
In the clip, they discuss motivation-related things, how it works, how it might not work the way we've wanted it to, and more. When Jamie asked Mel about her "motivation" views, she said it was "garbage." Following that, the host asked Mel to explain it.
"Yeah. Motivation is garbage. And the reason why is it's never there when you need it. Like I think one of my biggest messages, "Don't expect it to be easy." Why are you expecting to feel like going to the gym? Like, just because you bought a cute outfit, you know, to go, doesn't mean you're going to feel like going," said Mel Robbins.
She further elaborated that she often witnesses how everyone makes the same mistake "over and over and over again." It was putting all the time and energy into "planning" and getting things ready.
On the contrary, people don't understand that whenever it is "time to do" that actual thing, they're not:
"Going to feel like doing the thing."
As a result of such situations, people often sit around and wait for the "moment" to feel ready, to feel "inspired,"
"And just think about how liberating it is if you lived your life with the simple truth that, "I will never feel like doing the things I need to do. But I am going to do them anyway. I am not going to be the kind of person that lets my insecurity or my mood in the moment or how I feel about something right now, and all that stuff to override the actions that I need to take in order to become the kind of person that I'd like to become," shared Mel.
Further in the discussion, the guest expressed her frustration because of the word "motivation" and how it is "thrown around" like candy. She stated that it often turns out to be a "pay lip service" for most individuals, not just talking, not actually "doing" it.
While talking to the Shark Tank mentor, Mel Robbins mentioned that if individuals were to "just flush down the toilet" of the belief that, someday, they would feel "ready" to do the "thing," then there was a chance that they would do the thing "right now."
