The South Korean television drama series Moon Embracing the Sun (also known as The Moon that Embraces the Sun or The Sun and the Moon) features Han Ga-in, Kim Soo-hyun, Jung Il-woo, and Kim Min-seo. It ran on MBC for 20 episodes on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 21:55 from January 4 to March 15, 2012.


The historical fantasy drama is based on Jung Eun-gwol's novel of the same name. It describes the struggles and plot of competing political powers as well as the heartwarming romance between a female shaman and a fictional Joseon Dynasty king.

The South Korean actress and model Han Ga-in portrays Lady Heo Yeon-woo / Shaman Wol in the series. Despite her destiny as the Queen of Joseon, Yeon-woo is taken advantage of by Prime Minister Yoon and the cunning Queen Dowager. While being named Crown Princess, she inexplicably passes away before the wedding.


She becomes a shaman after losing her memory. She is captivated by her weird "visions" of the king's enigmatic first love and her unexplained connection to him when she returns to the palace eight years later as Shaman Wol. Kim Yoo-jung portrays the 13-year-old Lady Heo Yeon-woo.

The South Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun portrays Lee Hwon in the show. The bright and kind Lee Hwon falls in love with Heo Yeon-woo and is committed to her memory even after her untimely death. He starts an investigation after meeting Wol because he has concerns about Yeon-woo's death and uncovers sinister secrets and conspiracy theories. Yeo Jin-goo portrays the 15-year-old Lee Hwon, Crown Prince of Joseon.

The South Korean actor Jung II-woo portrays Prince Yangmyung in the show. The king's concubine's son makes him ineligible for the throne, despite being the older brother. His devotion to his brother, his attraction to Shaman Wol, and his unrequited, lifelong love for Yeon-woo are all difficult for him to reconcile. Lee Tae-ri portrays young Prince Yangmyung.

The South Korean actress Kim Min-seo portrays Lady Yoon Bo-kyung / Queen Yoon in the show. The Queen Dowager and her father, Prime Minister Yoon, use Bo-kyung to keep their clan in power. She becomes the Crown Princess of Lee Hwon following Yeon-woo's death.
