The final confrontation between Godzilla and the Ion Dragon was the culmination of the Monarch crew's mission to track down Hiroshi Randa in season 1 of the show. The discovery of what Hiroshi was really up to prompted Lee Shaw to continue his work, which eventually led him, Cate, and May on a chance expedition underground.

Along the way, they had an unexpected encounter with Keiko Randa. This massive discovery proved to be the turning point as they gained an unlikely ally in APEX, paving the way for a memorable Kong appearance with major implications for Season 2.

If you are still unaware of the events that unfolded in Season 1 of the show, you can tune into Apple TV+ and stream Season 1 so that you can start the new season knowing the backstory.
