Paramount's new crime thriller MobLand premiered its first episode earlier today, setting the stage for intense violence. The episode opens with a public murder and closes on a similar note. Produced by Guy Ritchie, this series follows the Harrigan crime family embroiled in their exploits across modern-day London. The first episode features a lot of casualties, and along with it, an introduction to the family members, their associates, and their enemies.
The first episode features the Harrigan family head, Conrad Harrigan, a pragmatic patriarch who does not think twice before pulling his trigger. In the new episode, we see that Conrad is not killed. Instead, he kills his closest confidant, his childhood friend, Archie, on suspicion of being a traitor. Here's everything that happened.
What Happened in MobLand's Premiere Episode?
Conrad's Slippery Trigger Finger
The premiere episode of MobLand kicks off with two rival gangs, the Dogan and the Lozarous, locked in a dispute. Since the confrontation takes place on the turf of the Harrigan family, a family representative, Harry Da Souza (Tom Hardy), attempts to bring everyone to a peaceful resolution. However, when it becomes clear that neither party wishes to apologize, Conrad Harrigan steps in and solves the problem by having Harry execute both gangs. This opening public execution sets the tone and atmosphere of the thriller MobLand.
While the adults of the Harrigan family in MobLand seem to have their ways sorted, the children seem to have a different story going on. Archie's death at the hands of Conrad is a direct repercussion of a bar-crawling night out betweem Eddie Harrigan, Conrad's grandson, and his friend Tommy Stevenson. Tommy Stevenson happens to be Richie Stevenson's son, Harrigan family, and Conrad's biggest rival, but this does not stop the two (Eddie and Tommy) from being good friends. Tommy Harrigan does not shy away from throwing his name around to get whatever he wants or physically hurting anyone who stands in his way. So, he ends up stabbing a guy who gets aggressive towards him during an altercation at the bar and escapes thereafter.
The premiere episode of MobLand in a way foreshadows Archie's death through Maeve Harrigan, Conrad's wife, who confuses Archie with his dead brother, Pete. Whether this slip was deliberate or a genuine mistake remains to be seen. Meanwhile, Archie warns Conrad that his decision to enter the fentanyl business might trigger a war with the Stevenson family, as it is their turf. Conrad does not take Archie's comments seriously, but this might be the moment the seed of doubt is planted in Conrad's mind which ultimately seals Archie's fate.
Will Eddie's mess cause a war between the Harrigans and the Stevensons

Eddie's father calls Harry toclean up the mess that Eddie has created. Harry warns Eddie to straighten his ways and attempts to destroy every last piece of evidence, including threatening the man that Eddie had stabbed. Whether or not this incident comes back to haunt the Harrigan family remains uncertain. Additionally, the Stevenson family is looking for Tommy, who was last seen with Eddie. When the Stevensons realize that Tommy was missing and that he was last seen with Eddie, the possibility of war between the two families seems inevitable.
Harrigans and the Stevensons set up a meeting at Moody's gym, which appears to be a neutral turf in MobLand with a unique set of rules. Even though Richie Stevenson arrives seemingly ready for blood, Harry mediates the situation. They come to an understanding: the Harrigans have 18 hours to return Tommy to them or there will be a war. Harry suggests to Conrad that it might be wiser to kill Richie now, as there's a possibility that Tommy is already dead. Conrad agrees with Harry, but Maeve Harrigan stops them by arguing that this is not the right time to kill Richie.
Is Maeve lying to Conrad?

This is the first — but certainly not the last time — that Maeve Harrigan appears to be the puppet master behind Conrad's trigger finger in MobLand. Later, right before a family meeting, Maeve tells Conrad that Archie is a traitor working for both the Stevensons and Ritchie. When Conrad refuses to believe her, she tells him to test Archie by talking about his plans to enter the Fentanyl market and noticing how he reacts. Archie fails to pass this test as he reacts just as Maeve predicted he would, asking Conrad to let Ritchie run the Fentanyl business. This reaction was seemingly enough for Conrad to believe Maeve, brand his closest confidant a traitor, and shoot him dead.
It is clear that even though Conrad Harrigan is the patriarch in MobLand, he is not the one in charge. His wife, Maeve, is revealed to be the one controlling his decisions — for instance, whether to kill or not. It remains to be seen if Maeve is actually loyal to Conrad or if she is leading him towards his end. Conrad might be considering the same options as he snaps and shrugs off Maeve's arm before walking out as she tries to console him for Archie's death.
The first episode of MobLand has raised a lot of questions regarding the family members and their loyalties. Only time will tell if the Harrigan household still has a mole and Maeve's loyalties need to be reconsidered or if Archie was actually helping the Stevensons.
