Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 doesn't have a release date, but we do know that the upcoming season of the live-action adaptation will feature Toph Beifong. This is not surprising because the Earth-Bending character was introduced in the second season of the original animated series as well. And, just like in the show, Toph will be visually challenged here too.
The character originally voiced by Michaela Jill Murphy will be played by actress Miya Cech in the live-action format. We already know that Toph, unlike the animated series, will be a bit older in this version of Avatar: The Last Airbender. This was confirmed by the actress herself at the 2024 Unforgettable Gala. When asked about the show's version of Toph, the actress said:
“She’s a little bit older so she’s not a little kid anymore. She is still that same spitfire, spunky character who gets to call a certain character ‘Twinkle Toes’. I think there are going to be a lot of things that the fans are going to remember from the animated series and a lot of things that are brand new.”
Now, the actress in a new interview with The Direct's Pierre Chanliau revealed some changes to her character in the Netflix version. In which she revealed that her character will be slightly more feminine than the tomboy Toph from the original animated series that fans associate with the character.
What did Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender Toph Beifong actress Miya Cech say?
Actress Miya Cech was on the red carpet for her sci-fi horror movie Marshmallow. On that red carpet, Pierre Chanliau, The Direct's journalist, asked Cech how different her interpretation of the fan-favorite character Toph Beifong will be from the original animated version on Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2. Her answer was:
"My version of Toph is going to be a little older and slightly more feminine. I feel like I wanted to work into a very humanizing space for her because, you know, she was a cartoon."
Furthermore, Miya Cech also revealed that she interacted with VA (voice actor) Michaela Jill Murphy, who voiced Toph in the animated Avatar: The Last Airbender show. Cech mentioned:
"I have met Makayla who plays the voice of Toph, and I feel like we have both a very similar take in terms of process."
What do her comments mean for Toph in Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender?
Released in February 2024, Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender had several changes from the original animated show. While fans may feel like reacting to Miya Cech's comments, in the fifteenth episode of the second season, "The Tales of Ba Sing Se", Katara and Toph visit a spa. Despite her initial apprehension, Toph ended up enjoying the experience, for which she ultimately thanks Katara.
What is Season 2 about?
If the live-action animated show is following the original animated series' format, it will be focused exclusively on Earth. EPs Jabbar Raisani and Christine Boylan had an interesting tease for the fans for the upcoming season:
“There’s no war in Ba Sing Se”
To those who don't know, Ba Sing Se is the Capital of the Earth Kingdom in the Avatar Universe. In the original animated series, a lot of refugees from other kingdoms head to Ba Sing Se to escape the Fire Nation's war. But this stronghold has its own dark secrets. No one within this kingdom is allowed to mention the ongoing war outside.
Dai Li, the police force of the Kingdom, would capture anyone mentioning the war and would brainwash them with the aforementioned line. The EPs said this regarding what to expect from the characters in the second season:
“For the Gaang, fans can expect more brilliant plans from Sokka, even more masterful bending from Katara, Appa, and Momo to be as fluffy as ever, and Aang to learn a new bending form (or two).”
They continued:
“We’re going to challenge our characters with more complex and nuanced obstacles as they navigate a more tactile world,” say Boylan and Raisani. “Just as the animated series matured and progressed, the live-action will also take these characters and worlds and grow them.”
Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 doesn't have a release date yet. But you can binge the entire first season on Netflix.
