Mid-Century Modern is 'not your mama's sitcom,' is how co-writer Max Mutchnick described this new Hulu sitcom that premiered on March 28. The creators of Will & Grace, David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, have come together again for this new offering.

Multiple cameras film in front of a live audience, much like the '90s sitcom Friends. This comedy sitcom brings together a combination of the tried and tested sitcom form but with queer themes.

Mid-Century Modern follows three gay best friends as they decide to live together. But there's a catch- they're moving into the house of one of them (the wealthiest among them), who happens to be living with his mother. All 10 episodes of this heartwarming comedy are available to stream on Hulu.

Although the show is set in Palm Springs, California, most of it was not shot there. Here's where the show achieved its Palm Springs and Mid-Modern aesthetics.

The Hulu comedy Mid-Century Modern is set in Palm Springs, California, but the primary filming was mostly in Los Angeles and Burbank, California. The filming of this show officially began on November 21, 2024, before which a pre-shoot set up all the framework needed for the production team.

Within a few months, which were filled with dedication and hard work, filming finished on February 19, 2025, and a season wrap was announced.

This Matt Bomer (Jerry Frank), Nathan Lane (Bunny Schneiderman), Nathan Lee Graham(Arthur Broussard), and Linda Lavin (Sybil Schneiderman) starrer is a heartwarming tribute to Lavin, who died in December 2024 while the show was still in production. Even though the show does fall back on certain traditional cliches when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community, it manages to do it endearingly with a signature flair.

Los Angeles, California

The filming for Mid-Century Modern primarily happened in Los Angeles. LA offered the creators an opportunity to perfectly build their shoot interiors and control every aspect of the shoot.

The exact aesthetic that the production team needed for the show was built delicately on soundstages. A well-established center for productions, Los Angeles offered expert equipment, facilities, and professionals to the production team.

Los Angeles has been the location for many iconic productions, from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Pulp Fiction to La La Land. This filming location choice offered a dynamic setting to the production team of Mid-Century Modern, greatly contributing to their aesthetics and atmosphere.

Burbank, California

The second location for filming was the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. This studio is also well-established for being a host to a great number of iconic television shows. This 51-acre studio lot is located at 500 South Buena Vista Street, Burbank, California 91521. The studio offers top-quality production offices, soundstages, and backlot spaces. This made it a great option for the environment that the shoot demanded. The state-of-the-art features allowed the production team to create the aesthetic of the show, which is an extremely important part of the sitcom.

Although the Mid-Century Modern production team must have shot the background imagery and the establishing shots in Palm Springs, California, the rest of the Palm Springs aesthetics were built and captured in these two filming locations entirely.
