Ruby and James

Ruby and James couldn't be more different. She’s focused on her future, he’s hiding his pain. But something about them just clicks.

Ruby is a girl with clear goals. She’s smart, determined, and doesn’t let anything distract her, especially not love. Her dream is to make something of herself and not depend on anyone.

When Ruby and James meet, sparks fly, but it's not perfect. They don't get along at first with James being constantly rude and condescending towards her; but slowly, James starts to open up to her, something he’s never done before. Ruby challenges him, and for the first time, he lets someone see the real him.

James had spent his whole life trying to live up to his father’s expectations. Emotions? He buried them deep. But with Ruby, he found a reason to feel again.

Just when things seemed to be going well, James did the unthinkable, he broke up with Ruby. Why? Because his father, Mortimer, thought she was only after his money and threatened her future at Oxford if James didn't end things with her.

James didn’t want Ruby to get hurt, so he pushed her away, even though it tore him apart. Mortimer believed in power and appearances. He didn’t care about love, only status. To him, Ruby was beneath their family. He tried to break them apart, and sadly, he succeeded; at least for a while.

Time passed, and they both ended up at Oxford for their interviews. When James saw Ruby with another guy, his heart sank. That’s when he realized, he still loved her.

He opened up, confessed everything, and Ruby, still in love, decided to give him another chance.

At the end of the season, we see James and his sister Lydia going home from Oxford, only to find out that their mother had passed away. James asks his father why he didn't even inform them, his father does not care. Instead, he is seen taking a call and discussing the stocks of his company, no sadness about his wife.

That was the final straw.

James exploded with anger. He stood up to his father for the first time and walked out. No plan, no direction. Just pain.

He goes to see Ruby so he can tell her what had just hapened, but when he approaches her house he sees her celebrating with her family, happy. He doesn't want to ruin her happiness and he is seen walking away before she can see him.

Lydia and Sutton

James' sister Lydia falls in love with Sutton, a smart man with a big problem. He's her professor, and that makes everything between them risky and complicated. Their connection was real, but it was dangerous.

At the start of the show Ruby accidentally saw them together, and Sutton panicked. He was scared of losing his job, so he broke up with her and Lydia was left heartbroken and confused.

Just when she thought things couldn’t get worse, Lydia found out she was pregnant. She kept it a secret for a long time. She wanted to run away with Sutton but stopped at the last moment. She realized she still had her dreams and responsibilities to think of, and a family to fight for her rightful place in the family business.

Lydia had always dreamed of taking over her family’s business. She was capable. She was smart. But her father didn’t believe in her. He thought she would bring bad luck. Will she finally stand up to him? In Season 2, we might see her fight back for what’s rightfully hers.

The show ends on a cliffhanger and leaves the viewer with so many questions:

• Will James push Ruby away again, thinking he’s not good enough?
• Will Ruby fight to bring him back?
• Will Lydia tell her father about the baby?
• Can she claim her place in the business world?
