Matlock Season 1 finale left the viewers on the edge with some thought-provoking revelations and a dramatic court room case. Matlock follows the story of retired lawyer Madeline 'Matty' Matlock, who returns to practice to seek justice for the death of her daughter. The two-part finale, titled Tricks of the Trade Part I and 2, which aired on April 17, 2025, on CBS finally brings forth the man behind the stolen Wellbrexa documents.
While Matty and Olympia have been figuring out the intricacies of the case, Sarah finds herself in an unexpected situation, when a client she had unofficially taken on gets into a brawl with his business partner, who ends up dead. Things turn upside down for Matty when a new person enters her family life. The finale has perfectly set the stage for Matlock Season 2.
Who stole the Wellbrexa documents?
Matty and Olympia have been trying to find hard evidence in the Wellbrexa case. When it is brought to light that Senior wanted the documents gone, Matty suspects that Julian did the job for him, as Senior was in Australia during the time. Olympia is reluctant to accept that Julian is at fault, but she starts doubting the supposed trust fund he had got to buy their brownstone home. Matty and Olympia get into an argument with both showing distrust towards each other. Edwin, Matty’s husband has doubts if Olympia will help with the case.
When Olympia is unable to access Julian’s bank records, Matty uses some shifty methods to help her. Trusting in Olympia’s need to serve justice, Matty stays with Sarah and lets Olympia look for the files. Olympia learns that Julian’s mother had indeed opened the trust, and Julian did not make the money though Wellbrexa. However, as she was about to leave, she gets to look inside Julian’s safety deposit box where she finds the missing documents. She is distressed to learn the truth.
When Julian realizes that Olympia knows that he had hidden the documents, he pleads with her to understand why he did it. He tells her that he wanted to please his father when he was younger, and he merely carried out instructions. He begs her to help him destroy the documents as he wanted to start fresh.
Olympia is also made a partner at Jacobson Moore. She must now take the difficult decision of unveiling the truth for justice or hiding it to preserve her family and career.
Sarah is in trouble
When Sarah decides to write a cease-and-desist letter for an acquaintance, Dino, she did not know that she would set off a chain of events that would end in court with a manslaughter case. The letter leads to a fight between Dino and his business partner, which ends in the later’s death.
Sarah, who was keeping the case under wraps is forced to share the details with Olympia and Matty after Dino is arrested. Along with Billy, Matty and Olympia work together on the case to help Sarah. On the day of the case Sarah gets Dino’s charges dismissed after she reveals in the court that his business partner died from burst appendix caused by supplements.
Meanwhile Simone blames Sarah for her breakup with Billy. Billy shares with Sarah that he had been having an affair with Claudia, who out of the blue turns up at the office and reveals that she is pregnant.
After the case, Simone learns that Dino was not a client at Jacobson Moore and wants to find a way to get Sarah fired.
Matty’s life is about to change
Matty and Edwin Kingston have been discussing about the custody of Alfie after their time. Alfie, however, wanted to know the identity of his father. The Kingstons are left surprised when a man claiming to be Alfie’s biological father turns up at their door. Alfie had gotten in touch with him secretly. The father insists that he wants to get to know Alfie. Although Matty is hesitant to bring in a new person in his life, she agrees to it when she realizes that Alfie wants it.
